'Dogs win third straight match with 1-0 victory over Aggies

LOGAN, Utah – The Fresno State women's soccer team won its third consecutive game by defeating Utah State in Logan, Utah for the first time in program history 1-0, Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs were led by senior Olivia Muhrbeck who netted the winning goal in the 59th minute.
Fresno State improves to 6-9-3 (5-3-2 MW). This was a critical match for the Bulldogs to stay in contention to earn a bid to the Mountain West Championship, by finishing within the top six of the conference. This win puts Fresno State in fifth place in the MW standings.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Tori Nicolo, Chloe Chedester, Megan Amick, Sydni Lunt, Alyssa Nishikawa, Ele Avery, Robyn McCarthy, Emma Chivers, Danielle Pacheco and Kayla Calmes chalked the start for the 'Dogs with Nicole Theroux in the goal.
The 'Dogs had their first offensive opportunity in the third minute when Avery took the first shot on goal of the game, the Aggies' goalie was there to make the save.
Utah State swung the momentum its way in the 30th minute, taking three consecutive shots on goal. Theroux recorded the saves to keep the Aggies off the board.
The first half was a defensive battle with neither team being able to gain the upper hand. Utah State finished the first half with more shots (6-3) and more corner kicks (4-2). Fresno State recorded more saves 3-1.
Fresno State took charge of the game in the second half. The 'Dogs worked to get their first look at thr goal in the 58th minute, but Ellis' shot was saved. Within a two-minute span Fresno State's offense took over recording three shots that were blocked and two corner kicks, from the 58th minute to the 59th minute.
Fresno State took a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute when Ellis got her foot on a deflected shot in the goal and sent it to Muhrbeck, Muhrbeck shot it on the left side to find the back of the net.
The Dogs' defense went to work during the last 30 minutes, limiting the Aggies to three shots for the remainder of the match.
Utah State took its last shot in the 88th minute but missed wide, securing the win for Fresno State.
