LOGAN, Utah – Fresno State held Utah State to a -.045 hitting percentage, the first time the 'Dogs have limited a MW opponent to a negative hitting percentage since joining the conference in 2012, and cruised to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-10) road win on Thursday night in Logan, Utah.
League-leading Fresno State (12-5, 4-0 MW) remained the only undefeated team in conference play as its 4-0 start ties for the best start to a conference season in program history (the 2001 team opened 4-0 in the WAC). Utah State (3-13, 1-4 MW) had just 22 kills and 27 attack errors for a -.045 hitting percentage, the lowest hitting percentage against the Bulldogs since they held Prairie View A&M to -.056 hitting in 2016.
Fresno State totaled 10.0 blocks in the match while the Aggies also committed 17 more attack errors. Haile Watson led the 'Dogs defensively with seven blocks and had six kills while Aubrey Folk totaled five blocks and eight kills. Kava Durr and Taylor Slover tied for the team lead with nine kills and Slover added nine digs and three blocks. Madelyn Halteman recorded 30 assists and eight digs and Reagan Leonard had a match-high 13 digs.
How it Happened
Fresno State led for the entire match other than a 2-1 Utah State advantage to start the first set. The 'Dogs answered with a 5-0 run and never trailed again the rest of the night. Utah State had six kills and 13 attack errors in the first set, hitting -.175, as Watson had a hand in all four Bulldog blocks and led the way with three kills in the opening period. Fresno State led 14-5 after a 13-3 run and closed out the set on a kill from Folk (watch).
The Aggies kept things closer early in the second set as the 'Dogs held just a 10-9 lead, but a 7-0 run extended the advantage to 17-9. The second set was the only one in which Utah State had more kills than attack errors but it still hit just .081. Durr had six kills and hit .444 in the set and the 'Dogs led 20-12 before the Aggies made things interesting. Fresno State reached a set point at 24-18 before Utah State scored four straight points, but a joust at the net went the way of the visitors as they closed it out (watch).
The third set was never close as the 'Dogs led 3-0 and 12-4. After Utah State cut the Bulldog lead to 13-7, Fresno State would end the set on a 12-3 run, including a 7-1 spurt to close it out. The 'Dogs had 16 kills and just three attack errors in the third set, hitting .464, while the Aggies had just five kills before their sixth attack error of the set clinched the win for the Bulldogs (watch).
