Bulldog divers dominate again at UNLV Invitational

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Junior Irina Nikolaeva and senior Kelli Funk took first and second, respectively, in the 1-meter diving competition and the 'Dogs had two second place swimming finishes on the second day of the UNLV Invitational on Friday.

Manuela Mendolicchio took second in the 100 Breast and Ugne Mazutaityte was second in the 100 Back, with Mendolicchio claiming her second top-three finish in the meet. The Bulldogs also had three swimmers finish in the top seven in the 100 Fly on another strong day of competition. Â

Diving Highlights
- Competing on 1-meter for just the second time this season, Nikolaeva claimed first place in a field of eight with a 240.20 total.
- Funk, who won the 3-meter competition on the opening day of the invitational on Thursday, took second scoring 231.50 on 1-meter.
- Mendolicchio nearly broke her own school record in the 100 Breast. She had the second best time in the prelims at 1:02.37 and improved on that time to finish second in the final in 1:02.08, narrowly missing her Fresno State record time of 1:02.02 set last year.
- Mazutaityte had the top 100 Back time among 61 competitors in the prelims, touching in 54.87. She posted an identical time in the final but was narrowly edged by UC Santa Barbara's Tara Middleton, who won in 54.26.
- The Bulldogs had three swimmers finish in the top eight in the 100 Fly prelims to qualify for the final. Zofia Niemczak placed fifth in the prelims in 55.17 while Gabbie Libang was seventh in 55.41 and Kimberly Harbert was eighth at 55.82. Niemczak remained in 5th place in the final while Libang and Harbert moved up to sixth and seventh place, respectively. Libang's prelim time was a career best and fourth best in program history. Osianna Mcreed just missed the A final and won the B final in 55.90.
- Davies qualified for the A final in the 400 IM with a 4:27.13 time in the prelims, sixth best, and went 4:25.73 in the final to place eighth. Brenda Diaz Martinez won the B final in 4:22.87, the fourth best among all swimmers in the event and the second fastest in program history.
- Niemczak made the A final in the 200 Free, placing seventh in 1:51.10, and finished eighth in the final.
- Fresno State's 'A' team placed fourth in the 200 Medley Relay as Mazutaityte, Mendolicchio, Harbert, and McReed had a team season-best time of 1:43.19. The Fresno State 'A' team placed 10th in the 800 Free Relay to close the session.
- The final day of the UNLV Invite begins with prelims at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. There will be only swimming events and no diving on Saturday.
