FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State swimming & diving team will be one of nine teams taking part in the UNLV Invitational Thursday through Saturday in Las Vegas.
The 'Dogs will compete against host UNLV as well as Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara, San Diego, Pacific, CSU Bakersfield, UC San Diego, and Fresno Pacific in Fresno State's regular season meet that most resembles the MW Championship.
"I'm excited," Fresno State head coach Jeanne Fleck said. "We are stronger than we've ever been and are doing things in dual meets that we've never done before. With a little bit of rest and to suit up I think it'll be fun."
After facing injuries throughout the first month and a half of the season, the Bulldogs are back to full strength and will use the UNLV Invite to help set their lineup for the conference championship in February.
"Everyone is healthy so we are going full bore," Fleck said. "It will be fun to see what a lot of our freshmen do and see where we are and who's going to make the conference team. This is a big meet for setting up the conference championship team."
UNLV will be the only other MW school in the field as the 'Dogs will get a chance to face some schools that they don't normally race. However, Fresno State already competed against four of the other teams in the field earlier this year (UC Santa Barbara, CSU Bakersfield, Pacific, and Fresno Pacific).
The 'Dogs faced Pacific in their last meet on Nov. 17, winning 13 of 16 events for a 189-104 dual win. Freshman Brenda Diaz Martinez continued her sensational debut season by winning all three individual events in which she raced (500 and 1000 Free, 200 IM). Ugne Mazutaityte and Manuela Mendolicchio each earned two wins against the Tigers and Kelli Funk won both diving events.
Fresno State also won 13 of 16 events in their double-dual wins over Fresno Pacific and Pomona-Pitzer. The 'Dogs raced CSU Bakersfield and UC Santa Barbara in a limited capacity in the CSUB Sprint Classic, finishing ahead of the Roadrunners but behind the Gauchos in a meet that included just 50 yard races in each stroke and two Individual Medleys.
Funk has won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events in each of the 'Dogs last two dual meets and had a strong showing at the Trojan Diving Invitational, placing fourth on both 3-meter and platform. Junior Irina Nikolaeva returned from injury to make her season debut against Pacific and took second on 1-meter.
All three days of the UNLV Invitational will begin with prelims at 9:30 a.m with finals starting at 5:00 p.m.
