Bulldogs shut out Stanford, 2-0, in eight innings

TEMPE, Ariz. – Freshman Danielle East threw a complete game shutout for her first collegiate win as Vanessa Hernandez broke a scoreless tie with a 2-run home run in the 8th inning to propel the Bulldogs to a 2-0 win over Stanford on Saturday morning in Tempe.
Â
Hernandez accounted for the only two runs in the game with a leadoff home run to begin the eighth inning. That was all that East needed, as the freshman lefty scattered seven singles and did not walk a batter while striking out two in eight scoreless innings.
Â
How It Happened
The Bulldogs had chances to score in almost every inning, putting runners on base in each of the first five innings and in seven of the eight innings played. Stanford also had chances early, but between the third and seventh innings East retired 12 of 13 batters to keep the game scoreless.
Â
Through seven innings the Bulldogs had left nine runners on base and the Cardinal had stranded six. With the international tiebreaker in effect, the Bulldogs began the top of the eighth inning with a runner on second base. On a 2-0 pitch, Hernandez, who hit seven home runs last season, drove a ball deep over the left field wall. The 'Dogs had two more baserunners on as Emily Brodner and Dominique Jackson followed with singles but Stanford got out of the inning without further damage.
Â
With a runner on second to start the bottom of the eighth, Stanford followed with an infield single to place runners on the corners with nobody out. East then induced a line out to third base, a fly out to shallow right, and a fly ball to left center that left fielder Kaitlyn Jennings tracked down on the run to complete the shutouts.
Â
Notable
The Bulldogs move over to the Tempe Sports Complex to face No. 7 Arizona this afternoon at 4 p.m. Pacific. The game will not be video streamed but live stats will be available on Sidearm.
