FRESNO, Calif. – After months of preparation the Fresno State swimming & diving team will compete for a conference title at the 2018 Mountain West Championship Wednesday through Saturday at the Palo Alto College Aquatic Center in San Antonio, Texas.
Â
The Bulldogs are one of 10 swimming & diving programs in the conference and will look to build on a seven-place finish in the MW Championship in 2017. Fresno State had three dual wins over MW foes during the regular season, defeating San Jose State twice and topping New Mexico. Several individual Fresno State swimmers and divers could contend for conference titles and lead the team to a strong overall score.
Â
Junior Ugne Mazutaityte will be looking to win the 200 Backstroke title for the third time in as many seasons as a Bulldog, having won gold in the event as both a freshman and sophomore. She had the second fastest 200 Back time among all MW swimmers during the 2018 regular season and was just .09 seconds behind the top conference time recorded by UNLV's Kyndal Phillips. Mazutaityte has NCAA B times in the 200 Back as well as the 100 Back and will look to win the 100 conference title after breaking the program record and finishing fourth in the race at the 2017 MW Championship.
Â
Sophomore Manuela Mendolicchio will be looking for her first MW titles in her specialty, Breaststroke. Like Mazutaityte, Mendolicchio posted the second fastest 200 Breast time among all MW swimmers during the regular season and was just .17 behind the top conference time. The Fresno State record holder in the 100 Breast, Mendolicchio has the eighth best time in the conference in that event so far in 2017-18.
Â
In her first season as a Bulldog, freshman Zofia Niemczak has broken the program record in both the 100 and 200 Butterfly. Her top 200 Fly time is fourth fastest in the conference this year while her top 100 Fly time ranked seventh. Sophomore Kimberly Harbert could also challenge for a medal as she recorded the 7th best 200 Fly time in the league this year.
Â
Fresno State also had top-10 times in the MW this season from Emily Niles in the 1650 Freestyle and from Lucy Davies in the 400 Individual Medley. Junior Osianna Mcreed led the team in sprint events throughout the regular season.
Â
The Bulldogs also have three divers that could all earn points in San Antonio. Sophomore Serena Sedillo has the top Fresno State scores on 3-meter and platform this season. She won the platform competition at the Trojan Diving Invitational, topping 16 competitors from schools including UCLA and USC. She was named Mountain West Diver of the Week twice during the regular season and won the 3-meter competition in four meets.
Â
Irina Nikolaeva had the best 1-meter score on the team during the regular season and has had a career-best 3-meter score as well this year, qualifying for NCAA Zones on both boards. Kelli Funk led the team on platform at the Bruin Diving Invitational and has posted Zone-qualifying scores on both platform and 3-meter.
