Bulldogs drop close contest to No. 4 SMU, 9-8
FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State equestrian team dropped a close competition to No. 4 SMU, 9-8 at the Student Horse Center on Friday afternoon.
Fresno State saw Most Outstanding Player accolades from senior Taylor Dixon in the horsemanship and sophomore Natalie Wendt in the fences.
Fresno State earned an early lead in the equitation over fences event. The Mustangs were ranked No. 1 in the fences event in the February NCEA Event Rankings that was released on Thursday. Fresno State defeated SMU 3-2 in the fences, earning their points from senior Kylina Chalack, junior Alexandra Dirickson and Wendt. Wendt earned her second fences victory this season with a season-high score of 82 to SMU's 69.
"It was great to start off the meet with a win in the first event and to outscore the nation's top-ranked fences team is great," said head coach Eric Hubbard. "We are excited to honor this year's great senior class on Saturday and face another top-ranked team in Oklahoma State."
Fresno State maintained its momentum in the horsemanship, outscoring SMU 2-1. Dixon and junior Katelyn Altenhofel earned their points while junior Taeya Harle and sophomore Julia Kelly tied in their rides.
At the afternoon intermission, the Bulldogs had a 5-3 lead over the Mustangs.
The Mustangs battled back in the equitation on the flat arena where they were also ranked No. 1 in this week's NCEA Events Rankings. SMU outscored Fresno State 3-1. The 'Dogs lone point came from Dirickson who outscored SMU's Vivian Yowan 77-70.
SMU outscored Fresno State 3-2 in the reining to finish with a 9-8 victory. The 'Dogs earned a point from sophomore Paige Barton in a 69.5-63.5 victory over Olivia Pakula. The second Bulldog point was from Kara Gustafson in a 68-0 ride against Keagan Snively.
Fresno State is back in action tomorrow at the Student Horse Center against No. 5 Oklahoma State. The Bulldogs will honor their seven seniors in a Senior Day ceremony scheduled to begin at 11 am PT. Warm ups and the first ride will begin immediately after the ceremony.
Parking and admission at all Fresno State Equestrian meets are free of charge.
