Fourth-quarter surge sends ‘Dogs to 66-60 win at San Diego State

Utti finishes with game-high 14 points and four steals.
SAN DIEGO – In front of more than 4,300 fans, mostly kids as a part of a field trip day, Fresno State held San Diego State to two points over the last five minutes to secure a 66-60 win on Wednesday afternoon at Viejas Arena. The win was the Bulldogs' sixth in the last seven games.
Freshman Maddi Utti paced the 'Dogs with her fourth straight double-figure game, scoring 14 points to go with a season-high four steals. While Utti was the only double-digit scorer, seven Bulldogs recorded at least seven points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
With an early midweek tipoff, neither team was able to get their footing in the early going as both struggled from the field. Fresno State picked it up midway through and shot 46.2 percent from the quarter (6-of-13) but with seven offensive rebounds and forcing the Bulldogs into five turnovers, San Diego State held a 13-12 lead after one.
Tied at 15-15 early in the second, three straight turnovers by Fresno State were turned into six-point advantage for the Aztecs at 21-15. The 'Dogs countered by holding SDSU scoreless for over five minutes as they knotted up the game.
Despite the Bulldogs shooting 46.7 percent (7-of-15) in the third quarter the 'Dogs still found the Aztecs increasing their lead after the third at 43-39, due to an 8-0 run by SDSU midway through the period.
A pair of 3-pointers from Bree Delaney, one to close the third and to open the fourth put a jolt of momentum into the 'Dogs with under 10 minutes to play. The Aztecs still maintained a slim lead midway through as the offenses started clicking and were trading baskets. That came to a halt for SDSU with less the five minutes to go as the 'Dogs began getting stops.
A 3-pointer by Kristina Cavey with 4:19 remaining jump-started what turned into a 12-2 run to close the game for Fresno State. During the final four-plus minutes, the Bulldogs forced five turnovers and five missed field to grab their third conference road win of the season.

QUOTES
Head Coach Jaime White on the fourth quarter…
"We knew we had to do it in the fourth quarter. We talked about in the huddle like 'it's the fourth quarter, it's time.' We knew we had to go on a run and I think our players did a good job of one at a time just knocking down their lead."
On the win…
"At the end of the day, good teams win on the road and we had to find a way today. I'm proud of our kids of finding a way and grinding it out."
On the play of Katelin Noyer off of the bench…
"I thought she did a good job in getting those rebounds. What we're asking of her is to just be tall in there. When the ball comes to you, grab that ball. I thought she had a good matchup tonight and she came in with poise and finished some shots."
