Fresno State wins second-straight match by 4-3 scoreline.
FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's tennis team picked up their second-straight win on Wednesday night with a 4-3 victory over Eastern Washington at Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
Â
Fresno State started quick, earning the doubles for only the second time this month. Sophomores Juilane Triebe and Abbey Watanabe routed Stephanie Broussard and Rachel Swindell at the No. 3 spot, 6-0. The Bulldogs' top duo of Emma Wilson and Georgia Lawson then defeated Janaya Smith and Rylee Braeden, 6-2, to clinch the doubles point.
Â
Forced to shift their lineup without two players available, the 'Dogs showed little give early on. After starting her match 1-1 in the opening set, Wilson rattled off 11 of the next 12 points in the match to defeat Smith, 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot. Olivia Noble then knocked off Faye Worrall 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 to give Fresno State a 3-0 lead.
Â
The Eagles pulled within a point by picking up a pair of straight-set wins at No. 6 and 4. Triebe though ended EWU's momentum. After dropping the opening set 6-4 to Zoey Nelson, Triebe, who was playing in the No. 2 position for only the second time this season, bounced back with a 6-1 win in the second set to force a third. With the final set tied 5-5, the Bulldog sophomore clinched the win for the 'Dogs by winning the final two points of the match.
Â
Fresno State will begin conference play on the road next week, traveling to Reno, Nevada on April 6 to face the Wolf Pack at 11 a.m. PT.
