Gamez leads Fresno State with 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
LAS VEGAS – A 14-4 run to end the third-quarter was too much to overcome on Wednesday afternoon as Fresno State's time at the 2018 Mountain West tournament came to an end as the Bulldogs fell 71-55 to fifth-seeded Colorado State on Wednesday afternoon at the Thomas and Mack Center.
Freshman Aly Gamez led the 'Dogs in scoring, rebounds and assists, with 13, nine and five, respectively. Freshman teammate Maddi Utti added 10 points. The Rams were led by senior Hannah Tvrdy who scored a game-high 15 points to lead four CSU players who reached double figures.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
After allowing two quick 3-pointers at the top of the key, Fresno State settled in, allowing just one the remainder of the half. The two sides traded leads throughout the opening period as two ended the first 10 minutes knotted up at 15-15.
Â
The Bulldogs took a 20-18 lead early in the second, but the 'Dogs missed their next seven shots as CSU took a four-point lead into the final minutes of the half. Candice White erased the slim deficit at the end of half with a pair of layups late to keep the game on level terms through 20 minutes at 26-26.
Â
Colorado State opened up a five point advantage in the early going of the first half, but like other moments, the Bulldogs pulled back. Five quick points from Jordanna Porter tied the game at 33-33 with six minutes to play in the third. Fresno State though went through another cold spell and was unable to find a basket the remainder of the quarter as the Rams knocked down four 3-pointers in a 14-4 run to close the third and take a 47-37 lead.
Â
The three-ball continued to be a difference early in the fourth as Stine Austgulen struck twice in the opening two minutes to extend CSU's lead to 13. Back-to-back jumpers from Lore Devos made it 57-40 midway through the quarter, a deficit that was too much for the Bulldogs to overcome.
