Bulldog Equestrian advances in pair of events at NCEA Championships

The Fresno State equestrian team competed in the opening rounds of the newly expanded NCEA National Championships in four separate events on Wednesday at the Extraco Events Center. The Bulldogs will move on to the quarterfinals in the Equitation on the Flat and the Horsemanship events on Friday afternoon.
WACO, Texas - The Fresno State equestrian team competed in the opening rounds of the newly expanded NCEA National Championships in four separate events on Wednesday at the Extraco Events Center. The Bulldogs will move on to the quarterfinals in the Equitation on the Flat and the Horsemanship events on Friday afternoon.

The No. 9-seeded Bulldogs got the morning started against No.8-seed UT-Martin in the Equitation over Fences at the Extraco Show Pavillion. Seniors Sierra Swaffar and Kylina Chalack picked up Bulldog points in the event as the 'Dogs fell to the Skyhawks by a raw score of 635-597. Swaffar secured the first point of the day for Fresno State with a 159-156 victory over Lindsay Anderson and Chalack followed with a 169-154 ride over Abbie Hopkins.

As the No. 12 seed in the reining event, Fresno State faced off against the No.5-seeded Texas A&M and fell, 3-1. Sophomore Shea Gilson earned the lone point for Fresno State in a 134.5-134 ride against Madison Bohman. Each ride in the reining was determined by 2.5 points or less.

Fresno State earned its first victory in the Equitation on the Flat event as the No.9 seed facing No.8-seeded UT-Martin. The 'Dogs defeated the Skyhawks, 3-1. Juniors Brooke Nelson and Alexandra Dirickson along with Swaffar earned the trio of points to put the Bulldogs on top. Swaffar saw the largest margin of victory with a 171-153 ride against Quinn Reed.

The Bulldogs will move on to the quarterfinals on Fri., April 20 to face the No.1 seed Georgia in the flat at 11:30 a.m. PT in the Extraco Show Pavilion.

The No.9-seeded Fresno State equestrian team swept No.8 seeded South Dakota State in the horsemanship, 4-0. Rachel Williams, Julia Kelly, Taylor Dixon and Taeya Harle led the 'Dogs to the sweep of the Jackrabbits.

Fresno State will move on to face No.1-seeded Georgia in the quarterfinals on Fri., April 20 at 1 p.m. PT in the Extraco Coliseum.
