Fresno State (31-21, 14-8 MW) stayed alive for a MW title with the win, but Boise State was also victorious on Thursday. The Bulldogs need to win the last two games of the series with Nevada and will need Boise State to lose each of its two remaining games to finish in first place.Â
Rachel Minogue and Schuylar Broussard both homered for Fresno State while Minogue finished 3-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch and drove in four runs. Savannah McHellon and Katie Castellon also had multi-hit games as the 'Dogs posted their eight double-digit run game this season.Â
How it Happened
Fresno State scored in the first inning for the 19th time this season as Miranda Rohleder drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on a bunt before Minogue hit her second home run of the season to deep right-center (watch). The 'Dogs had a walk and a hit batter in the second but the runners were left on second and third.
Danielle East retired the first eight batters she faced and allowed just a walk over three scoreless frames to start the game. The Wolf Pack got to East in the bottom of the fourth, opening the inning with a bunt single before Erika Hansen delivered an RBI double to left center. Nevada scored a second run on an Alyssa Mendez single but a great defensive play by Katie Castellon (watch) helped East escape the inning.
In the fifth the 'Dogs loaded the bases with one out on a single, a hit by pitch, and an error. Nevada got a pop out but McHellon followed with a two-run single (watch). Broussard then blasted a 3-run home run to straight away center field to give the 'Dogs a 7-2 lead (watch).
Nevada (23-25, 10-12 MW) answered with seven runs on six hits and three Bulldog errors in the bottom of the fifth. The Wolf Pack sent 11 hitters to the plate as Kenzi Goins hit a 3-run homer and three different Nevada players had RBI doubles in the inning to put the Wolf Pack ahead 9-7.
The 'Dogs came back in the sixth as Kaitlyn Jennings and Castellon reached on hits and Minogue brought them in with a double off the wall in left (watch). Hayleigh Galvan followed with a single down the left field line to put the 'Dogs back in front (watch). Nevada got two aboard in the bottom of the 6th but East got a double play grounder to end the inning (watch).Â
Fresno State had two baserunners in the seventh but could not add to its lead. East got the first two outs in the seventh before a double put the potential tying run at second base, but the freshman lefty got a lineout to Minogue at first base to end the game (watch).
