Fresno native Tim Shelton is back in his hometown, joining Justin Hutson’s Fresno State men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach.
FRESNO, Calif. --- Tim Shelton, who is a native of Fresno, Calif., has been hired as an assistant coach for the Fresno State men's basketball program, head coach Justin Hutson announced on Friday.
Shelton returns to his hometown after spending 11 seasons at San Diego State as a beloved player and coach. He finished his high school career at Clovis West High School before deciding to play at SDSU, as one of Hutson's first recruits. Shelton also played for Hutson at Bakersfield High School.
"I'm thrilled to have Tim on my staff here at Fresno State," Hutson said. "He relates so well to players and his tireless work ethic will be such an asset for our program. Tim really is the whole package. We have accomplished a lot together throughout the years and it is always special to have a chance to come home."
Shelton was named an Under Armour 30-under-30 honoree by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) earlier this month, which annually recognizes the best 30 coaches under the age of 30.
Shelton is thankful for all of his experiences and opportunities at SDSU and looking forward to being a part of many new and special moments at Fresno State.
"I'm excited to be home," Shelton said. "There is a surplus of talent in the Valley that I am elated to see and recruit. There is a lot of great basketball history here at Fresno State and I am proud of that. I truly believe in Coach Hutson and his ability to lead on and off the court, as well as develop a program. We have a great group of student-athletes, who are eager to learn, respect the game and are talented. I look forward to getting to know them better. I'm ready to get to work."
As a SDSU assistant coach this past season, Shelton helped coach the Aztecs to the 2018 Mountain West tournament championship and a NCAA appearance. He was a key recruiter and on-court coach, while also being extensively involved in player development and monitoring the Aztecs' academic efforts.
He had been promoted by SDSU head coach Brian Dutcher to assistant coach when Dutcher took over for Steve Fisher in 2017. Shelton had previously served as the Aztecs' director of player development, with responsibilities including video breakdown, film exchange, travel and community service efforts.
Prior to his position on the Aztecs' support staff, Shelton played for San Diego State from 2007-12. In those five seasons, Shelton played in 109 games and played a key role in SDSU reaching the postseason in each of those years, including three consecutive NCAA appearances to close out his career.
Shelton was also a member of the 2010-11 squad that reached the NCAA Sweet 16, won the Mountain West regular-season and tournament titles, and finished 34-3. In addition to the pair of MW titles won in 2011, Shelton was a part of Mountain West championship teams in 2010 (tournament) and 2012 (regular season). In his final playing season (2011-12), Shelton began work toward his master's degree and guided the Aztecs to 26 victories, which at the time was tied for the second-highest total in school history, all while earning Mountain West all-defensive team accolades. The next season, Shelton completed his master's degree coursework as a graduate manager and San Diego State advanced to the NCAA Round of 32 en route to 23 wins.
Over the course of his entire 10-year Aztec career, Shelton has helped the program to 281 wins (25.6 wins per year), eight Mountain West championships and 10 postseason appearances (seven NCAA, including two NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances).
Shelton earned his bachelor's degree in history from San Diego State in 2011 and his master's degree in educational leadership in 2013.
