RENO, Nevada - Two runs in the bottom of the seventh by Nevada proved to be the difference on Friday night as the Wolf Pack topped the Diamond 'Dogs, 4-2 in a well-pitched game by both teams at Peccole Park.
Fresno State (26-19, 11-14 MW) was held to five hits on the evening as Nevada (23-19, 15-6 MW) redshirt senior right-hander Mark Nowaczewski tossed a complete game issuing no walks and striking out a career-high 10.
Junior outfielder Nolan Dempsey hit his fourth home run of the season and Zach Ashford extended his on-base streak to 47 games and hitting streak to 18 games with a pair of singles as the Clovis native tallied his team-leading 20th multi-hit game of the season.
On the mound, junior Edgar Gonzalez had his eighth quality start (six-plus innings, three earned runs or less) of the season tossing six innings allowing six hits, two earned runs, three walks while striking out five. Sophomore Davis Moore came in for the final two innings taking the loss, his second of the season, walking two and striking out three.
How It Happened
After Nevada stranded five baserunners on the basepaths through the first three innings, the Wolf Pack got the scoring started in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home run to left-center by center fielder Cole Krzmarzick, his first of the season, giving Nevada a 2-0 lead.
The 'Dogs quickly tied the game at two apiece in the top of the fifth inning as Dempsey drove a two-out, two-run longball to left field (watch).
With Gonzalez only allowing two more hits over his final two innings, he gave way to Moore who was greeted by the Wolf Pack with three straight singles in the bottom of the seventh scoring one run on a single back up the middle by left fielder Grant Fennell that shot right back at Moore on the mound. Designated hitter Mike Echavia followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to give the Wolf Pack an insurance run and a 4-2 lead.
An Ashford single in the eighth inning was all the 'Dogs could muster in the final two innings to give Nevada the series opening win.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On tonight's game....
"It was very similar to Tuesday's night game against Pepperdine. We played fantastic defense and to give up 12 hits and five walks, but only allow four runs means you are making big pitches in the clutch. It was very much a Friday night ballgame and both teams played excellent."
Notes
- Nowaczewski joins San Jose State's Josh Goldberg (March 17) as the only two pitchers to toss complete games against Fresno State this season.
- The five hits by the 'Dogs were the fewest since April 22 at San Diego State and tied for the third-fewest in a game this year.
- Freshman first baseman Emilio Nogales singled up the middle in the fifth inning for his first hit since April 7.
- Gonzalez struck out at least five batters for the 10th time this season.
