Come back comes up short as ‘Dogs drop opener vs. UNLV, 4-3

FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State came back from an early 3-0 deficit to tie the game in the fourth inning but UNLV regained the lead with a two-out run in the top of the seventh to pick up a 4-3 win over the Bulldogs in the series opener Friday night.
Fresno State (30-19, 13-6 MW) now trails San Jose State atop the Mountain West standings as the Spartans won on Friday to improve to 15-6 in league play and assume first place. The 'Dogs are tied for second with Boise State, which is also 13-6 in MW games after a win on Friday. UNLV (27-17, 9-10 MW) stayed hot as the Rebels have now won six of their last eight games.
Janine Petmecky did it all for UNLV on Friday as she threw a complete game with five strikeouts in the circle and was 4-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored hitting leadoff for the Rebels. Schuylar Broussard was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run to lead the 'Dogs offensively while Rachel Minogue and Chase LeeHong also drove in runs.
How it Happened
Petmecky led off the game with a single and gave the Rebels an early 1-0 lead as she scored on a Mia Trejo RBI double. In the second inning, UNLV got two runners aboard on hit-by-pitches and Petmecky delivered a two-out RBI single to make it a 2-0 UNLV lead. Justine Federe would follow with a single of her own to put the visitors ahead 3-0.
Fresno State got on the board in the bottom of the second as Hayleigh Galvan had a leadoff double and, with two away, Broussard came through with an RBI single up the middle (watch). The Bulldogs turned the second of three double plays in the game in the third and in the bottom half Kaitlyn Jennings was hit by a pitch and, after a walk and a sacrifice, scored from third with aggressive base running on a groundout from Minogue (watch).
After the first two Bulldogs were retired in the bottom of the fourth Broussard split the left-center gap with a double and LeeHong came through with an RBI single to tie the game (watch). Danielle East kept the Rebels at bay with four straight scoreless frames, getting some defensive help to end the sixth as second baseman Miranda Rohleder turned a line drive into an unassisted double play (watch).
In the seventh, East got the first out but Petmecky then tallied her fourth hit of the game with a triple to right center. East got a groundout for the second out, but on a grounder in the hole at short Trejo was called safe on a very close play at first to bring in the go-ahead run.
Broussard led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and LeeHong bunted pinch runner Brooke Coates to second as the potential tying run. Petmecky got a ground out to short for the second out before walking Rohleder. Katie Castellon then hit a line drive that was caught by Petmecky to end the game.

- Broussard recorded her first three-hit game of the season and the second of her career. It was her eighth multi-hit game of the season.
- Fresno State's three double-plays were a season high and marked the fifth time this season that the team had multiple double plays in a game.
- In her just her second and third starts in MW play over the last two games LeeHong has had an RBI single in each.
- The Bulldogs are now 3-4 on Friday in MW games with a 10-2 record in weekend MW contests.
