Bulldogs earn sweep in annual Alumnae Match
FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team kicked off its 2018 season with the annual Alumnae Match on Saturday afternoon at the Save Mart Center. The 2018 Bulldogs earned a 3-0 sweep of the alumnae team and battled through a predetermined fourth set for a 4-0 final.
The Alumnae team of former star Bulldogs, including 2016 libero and current assistant coach Maggie Eppright, Holly Franks, Brooke Legaux, Maci Murdock and Aleisha Coates. The Alumnae gave the current Bulldogs a good look at competing in game-like situations on the Save Mart Center floor.
"Today was great. It was a little bit different than what we've done in the past," said head coach Jonathan Winder. "We wanted an opportunity to get out some of the butterflies and go in the right direction. We knew there was going to be some uncertainty in some different lineups that we were going to use. The front line did a great job. The players did a great job of continuing to focus and putting in place the things that we've been practicing for the last week."
Senior Haile Watson led the Bulldogs with 13 kills while hitting .579 through four sets. Senior Taylor Slover proved to be a key in the Bulldog rotation with 10 kills, four aces, 12 digs and one block in the match. Junior Madelyn Halteman recorded 35 assists and sophomore Reagan Leonard led the team with 13 digs. Sophomore Montez Uigaese was strong in the front with nine kills hitting .412 and six blocks, one solo.
Winder had the opportunity to try out different lineups through the four sets. All 14 members of the roster saw court time in today's match. The Bulldogs totaled 55 kills, 13 aces, 68 digs and 14 blocks as a team.
Fresno State officially opens the 2018 season next week at the EIU Panther Invitational. The season opener is next Friday, Aug. 24, against Valparaiso in Charleston, Ill. The team's home opener will be on Tuesday, Aug. 28, against Fresno Pacific at 6:00 p.m.
