Jonathan Winder finished his fourth season leading Fresno State Volleyball in 2021.
After being named the eighth head coach in program history on Jan. 23, 2018, Winder has tallied 56 wins in his first four seasons at the helm of the Bulldogs.
His 56 wins are the second-most victories in a head coaches first three seasons in program history trailing only Lindy Vivas who won 74 from 1991-93.
With the 'Dogs tallying 12 wins in the fall of 2021, Fresno State was able to defeat both regular season champion Colorado State and tournament champion Boise State in the regular season.
The Bulldogs went 8-4 at home, tied for seventh in the MW and finished 16th in the country in aces per set (1.85). Desiree Sukhov was tabbed All-MW honorable mention while freshman Ella Rud finished fourth among Bulldog freshman in program history with 30 service aces.
Winder helped lead the 'Dogs to their second winning season in the last three seasons in the spring of 2021Â helping the Bulldogs go 8-6 after the fall season was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fresno State tied for fourth in the MW with Wyoming for its second top-four finish in the league under Coach Winder.
Three Bulldogs were named All-Mountain West selections with Sukhov, Jocelyn Rodriguez being named to the All-MW Team and Amaria Kelley was tabbed All-MW Honorable Mention.
The 'Dogs finished the spring season leading the Mountain West in team attacks per set (35.05), second in aces per set (1.78), service aces (98), third in total attacks (1,928), fourth in digs per set (14.45) and were fifth in blocks per set (2.22), digs (795), and total team blocks (122.0).
Sukhov ranked second in the MW in both service aces (26) and aces per set (0.47) while ranking second on the team in kills (165), kills per set (3.00), digs (127) and digs per set (2.31). Her 3.00 kills per set ranked ninth in the Mountain West.
Rodriguez finished second in the MW in digs per set (4.45) and third in digs (227) and recorded double-digit digs in 12 contests while Kelley led the 'Dogs in kills (171) and ranked eighth in the MW in kills per set (3.11) while tallying 34 blocks to tie for third on the team. Grace Doyle led the 'Dogs and ranked fourth in the MW with 64 blocks and checked in fifth in blocks per set (1.16).
Coming off 14 wins and tying for sixth-place in the Mountain West in 2019, three Bulldogs earned All-Mountain West honors as junior libero Reagan Libero was named All-MW while Sukhov also earned All-MW and was named the MW Newcomer of the Year. In addition, senior setter Madelyn Halteman earned All-MW Honorable Mention honors.
Winder guided the 2018 Bulldogs to a 22-11 overall record and 13-5 mark in the MW as the team broke the program record for conference wins in a season and finished in 2nd place in the MW for the first time after being picked seventh in the preseason MW Coaches' Poll. Fresno State finished behind only Colorado State, a program best MW finish and the first second place conference finish since the 2003 team was second in the WAC West division. Since joining the MW in 2012 the highest the 'Dogs had ever previously finished in the league was 4th place.Â
Fresno State's 22 wins were its most in 16 years, since the 2002 team finished the year 23-7, and Winder broke the program record for wins by a first year coach. The Bulldogs earned an automatic bid to the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC), the team's first postseason selection since 2002, and a first round NIVC win over UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 29 was the 'Dogs first postseason victory since 1995.Â
During the 2018 season the Bulldogs started the year 7-1 in non-conference play and began 9-1 in MW play, including a 3-1 home victory over perennial power Colorado State, Fresno State's first win over the Rams since 2012. A program-record four Bulldogs earned All-Mountain West honors, with seniors Taylor Slover and Haile Watson and junior Madelyn Halteman named All-Conference while sophomore Reagan Leonard earned honorable mention. The four all-conference honors were the most for the program since 2003 as the 'Dogs had never before received more than two All-MW accolades as a member of the conference.Â
The 2018 Bulldogs led the MW in digs and were second in kills and assists and third in blocks in conference play. The 'Dogs set a new program record with 1,999 digs and tied the program record with 316.0 blocks. Reagan Leonard broke the single-season digs record with 605 digs and a 4.65 digs per set average during the year and Haile Watson's 156 blocks ranked 19th in NCAA Div. I and tied for the fourth most in a season in program history.
Winder and his staff made an immediate impact in the community as Fresno State ranked second in the MW in average home attendance behind only Colorado State in 2018. Fresno State was one of just four NCAA Div. I schools in California that averaged more than 1,000 fans per match and topped 1,000 fans in 10 of its 13 home matches. The 'Dogs had a higher average home attendance than Pac-12 schools Cal and Washington State. Â
Â
A four-time All-American and the 2007 NCAA Player of the Year as a student-athlete at Pepperdine, Winder spent three seasons as an assistant coach for the University of Washington women's indoor volleyball program and the head coach of the Husky beach volleyball team. A 2008 graduate from Pepperdine, his coaching career began at his alma mater where he served as assistant coach for the men's team from 2013-15 after playing professionally and for the U.S. national team.
Â
A native of Irvine, Calif., Winder helped lead Washington to a 105-21 record over the last three seasons. The Huskies won back-to-back Pac-12 championships and had consecutive NCAA Elite Eight appearances in 2015 and 2016 while reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2017. Courtney Schwan, the 2016 Pac-12 Player of the Year, was one of eight All-Americans and 18 different All-Conference Husky student-athletes Winder coached.
Â
Washington reached the No. 1 national ranking for several weeks under Winder as the team finished 1st, 1st, and 2nd in the Pac-12 in his three years with the program. He has recruited extensively in California and brought in multiple top 25 student-athletes in the classes of 2017, 2018, and 2019, including five top 80 players in 2018 class.
Â
In two seasons leading the Husky beach volleyball program Winder led the team to a third place finish in the 2017 Pac-12 Championships after taking fourth place in 2016. He improved the team's record from 4-7 to 11-7, finishing 2017 ranked No. 16 in the NCAA. He coached six All-Pac-12 student athletes on beach with eight selections over 2016 and 2017, second only to national champion USC.
Â
In his first full season as a coach at Pepperdine in 2014 the Waves tied for first in the MPSF with an 18-6 record, reaching the conference tournament semifinals and ending the year ranked No. 4 nationally. Winder initially returned to Malibu in 2013 to work as an academic coordinator in the Pepperdine athletics department. He then moved into his assistant coaching role in June of 2013 under legendary head coach Dr. Marv Dunphy, serving as the team's acting head coach in October 2015 when Dunphy was coaching at the World Championships.
Â
Winder had one of the most storied collegiate men's volleyball careers in NCAA Div. I as he is one of only 11 four-time AVCA All-Americans in NCAA history. As a setter he led Pepperdine to an NCAA National Championship as a freshman in 2005 and was the NCAA National Newcomer of the Year and a second-team All-American. He earned second-team All-America honors again in 2006 and was first team in 2007 and 2008, leading the team to the final four and earning NCAA National Player of the Year honors as a junior and taking the team to the NCAA Finals as a senior.
Â
Winder holds the career assists record at Pepperdine with 5,118, and ranked fifth all-time with 656 digs. He was also a standout in the classroom, earning 3rd team ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-America honors in 2008 and being an MPSF Academic All-Conference selection in each of his four seasons.
Â
Following his collegiate career Winder became a member of the U.S. National Team and was an alternate for Team USA at the 2012 London Olympics. In 2007, he was on the U.S. squad that finished first at the Pan American Cup and was on the 2009 team that finished in second place. He also helped the U.S. place sixth at the 2010 FIVB World Championships and was part of several other national team rosters, including the 2012Â FIVBÂ World League and as Team USA captain at the World University Games in 2006. He also played professionally oversees in France, Germany, Greece, and Romania.
Â
Winder has connections with Fresno as his wife, Jaimie-Rose, is a Fresno native who attended Clovis West High School and Fresno City College. Winder's father-in-law, Vance Walberg, is the boys basketball coach at Clovis West and his sister-in-law, Heather Long, is the girls basketball coach at Clovis North.
Â
Winder graduated from Pepperdine in 2008 with a B.A. in Advertising and earned a Masters of Business Administration in 2015 from the Devry University Keller School of Management. He and his wife have three children including suns Hudson, who was born in January of 2015, and Hayes, born in September 2018, and daughters Sutton, who was born in August of 2016 and Sloane, born in May 2020.

What they are saying about Jonathan Winder…
Â
Marv Dunphy – Former Pepperdine and U.S. Men's National Team Head Coach
"I think Jonathan is one of the finest young coaches in our sport. He knows the game at the highest level and more importantly he has the gift to teach it at the highest level. It is a great get by Fresno State Athletics. He is solid in every way and I've never worked with a better person. What you see is what you get and that's not always the way in our business. He's a wonderful young man."
Â
Keegan Cook – Head Women's Volleyball Coach, Washington
"I'm really thrilled for Jonathan and his family and the Fresno State volleyball program. Sometimes hires just make too much sense, and this was one of those cases. In the three years I've gotten to work with Jonathan we've had three of our best years here at Washington and he was a huge part of that. It's been apparent to me for a long time that someone was going to get a great head coach in Jonathan and I'm looking forward to seeing what he and the university can do."
Â
Rick McLaughlin – Head Men's Volleyball Coach, UC Santa Barbara
"I'm very excited for Jonathan to get this opportunity - he's going to be an outstanding head coach. He comes from a (Pepperdine) program that has the best volleyball coach to ever coach the game in Marv Dunphy and he learned a lot from him. Anybody that's come out of that program and gone on to coach has had great success. Jonathan won a National Championship there as a freshman setter and got to work with (Dunphy) as an assistant coach and he is just a really bright volleyball guy. He's thinking volleyball nonstop and that's going to come through in his coaching. I just think he's going to be an incredible coach for Fresno State."
