FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno state women's tennis team will be heading north on Friday to compete in the Nike Cal Invitational at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts in Berkeley, Calif., on Friday, Sept. 28, through Sunday, Sept. 30.
Players from 12 different teams will be competing in the invitational including host team Cal, BYU, Cal Poly, UC Davis, Fresno State, Nevada, Sacramento State, Santa Clara, Saint Mary's, San Francisco and UC Santa Barbara. The event will feature singles and doubles play, and admission is free. Live streams and scoring will be provided here.
This will be the second time the 'Dogs compete this fall after taking part in the Battle in the Bay a week ago. There, freshman Jennifer Timotin and sophomore Alessia Dario compiled an overall record of 1-1 in doubles and 3-3 in singles over the weekend. Timotin took down Pacific's Georgia Townsend and Sacramento State's Maria Gonzalez, while Dario defeated Sacramento State's Jenna Dorian. Each of those singles victories were completed in two sets. Timotin and Dario teamed up to take care of Dorian and Gonzalez in doubles.
Competing this weekend will be Dario and freshman Ella Husrefovic. Although Dario saw action in the Battle in the Bay last weekend, this will be Husrefovic's debut in a Fresno State uniform. A native of Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, Husrefovic will make her collegiate debut after being ranked as high as No. 6 in Australia during her high school career.
"These matches give us a great chance to see where our players are in their development and what we need to continue to work on," said coach Ric Mortera. "I am looking forward to seeing how Alessia and Ella compete over the weekend."
Fresno State's next fall action will be competing in the St. Mary's Invitational at the Korth Tennis Complex in Moraga, Calif., on Friday, October 5, through Sunday, October 7. More information regarding admission and coverage will follow on a later date.
