ATLANTA - Former Fresno State Baseball student-athlete Tom Pendleton was inducted into the Atlanta Braves Hall of Fame on Friday evening during the Chop Fest Gala that took place at the Coca-Cola Roxy.
A Bulldog from 1981-82, Pendleton went on to play parts of five of his 15 seasons in the major leagues with the Braves from 1991-1994 and the end of the 1996 season.
Also a member of the St. Louis Cardinals, Florida Marlins, Cincinnati Reds and Kansas City Royals in his professional career, after his playing days were over, Pendleton went on to be on the Braves' coaching staff from 2002-17. He spent time as the hitting coach from 2002-10, first base coach from 2011-16 and bench coach through the 2017 season moving to a special assistant for the club during the 2018 season.
The 1991 National League Most Valuable Player for the Braves, Pendleton hit a career-best .319 from the plate for the season on his way to winning the league's batting title in his first season with the club as Atlanta advanced to the World Series falling in seven games to the Minnesota Twins.
The following season, Pendleton hit .311 from the plate and had career-bests in plate appearances (689), at-bats (640), hits (199), runs (98), doubles (39), RBI (105) finishing runner-up in the NL MVP race while being an All-Star and winning 1992 Gold Glove as the Braves again advanced to the World Series falling in six games to the Toronto Blue Jays.
"I was blessed and honored to be surrounded by a lot of great people and teammates here in Atlanta," Pendleton said on MLB.com earlier this week on his induction into the Braves Hall of Fame. " I know I would not have accomplished all that I did without them."
Overall in his 15-year professional career, Pendleton played in 1,893 games hitting .270 with 1,897 hits, 851 runs scored, 946 RBI, 356 doubles, 39 triples, 140 home runs, 127 stolen bases, and a .316 on-base percentage and a .391 slugging percentage.
An All-American and a First-Team All-NCBA selection in 1982 for the Bulldogs, Pendleton put together a fantastic final season at Fresno State in 1982 leading the 'Dogs to a 45-13 record and a berth in the District 8 Playoffs.
The Point Hueneme, Calif. native hit .397 from the plate on the season, eighth-best in program history for a single-season, smacking 98 hits, 29 for extra-bases, drove in 65 RBI and scored 63 runs leading the conference (NCBA) in hits, runs and RBIs.
Pendleton is one of 11 former Diamond 'Dogs to have his number retired as his No. 8 jersey hangs up at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Pendleton along with Hugh Duffy, an outfielder who played for the Boston Braves from 1892-1900, become the 34th and 35th members of the Atlanta Braves Hall of Fame.
