FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State water polo team is preparing to open its 2019 season in the UCSB Invitational Jan. 19-20. Before the Bulldogs depart to Santa Barbara, Gobulldogs.com caught up with sophomore attacker Trystyn Vuori.
Â
Vuori is a Valley native, she was raised in Clovis, Calif. and graduated from Clovis High School. Last season, Vuori played in all 25 games during the program's inaugural season. She was tied for fourth on the team with 15 goals scored, and logged four multi-goal games. She also recorded six assists, swiped nine steals and drew six exclusions.Â
Â
We asked her a variety of questions from her goals this season to her favorite class at Fresno State.
Â
Q: What does it mean to you to be from the Valley and have the opportunity for play for Fresno State?
Vuori: "It's such an honor to have been chosen to be a part of this team. We have so much talent here in the Valley. I hope to be an inspiration to all the girls in the Valley that are playing water polo with hard work, determination, and dedication anything is possible."
Â
Q: Coach Benson puts a lot of emphasis on the program representing the Valley, what does that mean to the team as a whole?
Vuori: "We are a diversified team full of individuals from all around and we pull together to represent the Valley. We take the values of the community and incorporate them into the main values that our team represents. As a team we play with spirit, strength and determination. We don't play for ourselves, but for our team. One of our values being "play for each other". We believe in working hard and not being afraid to get dirt under our nails. As a team we are intentional with everything we do and give nothing but our all. We feel like all of these are all values of this community."
Â
Q: What are you looking forward to this season?
Vuori: "I'm looking forward to seeing how we come together as a team in the water. This year is different from last year, we have a year of experience under our belts. We have a freshman class with great skill and grit. We have our returners who have taken last year and improved upon that. Together, we are a team with a lot of potential. I can't wait until our games start and we can show everyone what the Valley is made of."
Â
Q: What are your personal goals for the upcoming season?
Vuori: "My personal goal this season is to be a teammate that my teammates can look to for support and as someone who is going to push them every day."
Â
Q: What are the challenges of being a student-athlete?
Vuori: "As a student-athlete it can be hard balancing school and your sport. The amazing thing about Fresno State is that we have so many resources available to us ranging from free tutoring to academic advisors and much more. In my past I have struggled with balancing both but with the help of Fresno States resources. I have been able to get better grades than I ever have."
Â
Q: What is your favorite class you've taken at Fresno State?
Vuori: "I would have to say my favorite class has been criminal law. I really enjoyed that class because I had a great professor who was truly passionate about teaching. I was able to read tons of fascinating cases and learned a lot of things about criminal law."
