FRESNO, Calif. – 2019 NCAA national runner-up Cal and Washington State are among five teams joining host Fresno State for the season opening Chick-Fil-A Invitational sponsored by Chick-Fil-A Fashion Fair on Friday and Saturday. The annual meet will have three sessions over two days, including the first-ever competition under the lights at the Fresno State Aquatic Center. Admission for all Fresno State swimming & diving meets are free of charge.

"I'm very excited to open the season and to host this meet," Fresno State head coach Jeanne Fleck said. "We are racing Cal, one of the top-ranked teams in the country, and also having our Mountain West champions, San Diego State, here is great for the competition. This invite is an exciting opportunity to see where we are at as a team, the good thing is, half of the team are newcomers, so the girls don't know who anybody is, so they are just getting in and racing everybody."

The meet will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday followed by an evening session beginning at 6 p.m. The invitational will conclude at 10 a.m. on Saturday with the third session to complete the two day meet. Both diving events – 1-meter and 3-meter – will take place during the two sessions on Friday.

The 'Dogs will host a pair of Pac-12 teams over the weekend, while also welcoming three fellow MW schools in San Diego State, San Jose State and New Mexico. Cal will take part in the meet for the third consecutive season while the Spartans and the Aztecs are in the meet for the fourth-straight year.

Cal senior Abbey Weitzeil won two Olympic medals in 2016, including gold in the 400 Medley Relay, and junior Robin Neumann competed for the Netherlands in the 2016 summer games. Alicia Wilson who won gold medal in 200m IM at the World University Games, this year, will also be competing. The Golden Bears are led by former Fresno State head coach Teri McKeever.
 The first ever evening swim and dive competition in the Fresno State Aquatics Center adds to the excitement and will give fans an opportunity to make their way over to campus following the work day.

"It's always fun to swim under the lights and I'm hoping to see a bigger crowd here on Friday night," Jeanne Fleck.

Fleck's team returns two swimmers and one diver who earned All-MW honors last season. Senior Manuela Mendolicchio won the MW third place in the 200 Breast last season. Senior Kimberly Harbert, All-MW in 200 butterfly, while senior Irina Nikolaeva was All-MW on 1 meter platform diving
Mendolicchio broke the 100 IM records last season. As a team, the 'Dogs also broke program records in the 200 and 400 Medley Relays and the 800 Free Relay at the MW Championship last year.

The Bulldogs have eight seniors this year, but also welcome in a large freshman class with eleven newcomers. Fleck and diving coach Taryn Patrick are both in their 12th season with the program while associate head coach Anthony Randall enters his fourth year on the staff.
