FRESNO, Calif. – In a final tune-up before the 2019 MW Championship the Fresno State swimming & diving team hosts conference foe San Jose State at noon Saturday at the Fresno State Aquatics Center. Admission will be FREE.
The dual was scheduled to take place in San Jose but the Spartans' new pool was not completed in time to host. The Bulldogs held senior day two weeks ago in their home dual against UC Davis, which was scheduled to be the home finale, and San Jose State's five seniors will be recognized prior to the meet on Saturday.
The Bulldogs ended up getting six home meets this season as another scheduled road dual, at Pacific on Nov. 17, was also moved to Fresno due to the wildfires. The 'Dogs have home dual wins over Fresno Pacific and Pomona-Pitzer as well as Pacific this season. The squad also picked up road dual wins at San Diego and CSU Bakersfield and is 5-3 overall in duals this year.
Fresno State was narrowly defeated by UC Davis in its last meet, which came down to the final race before the Aggies claimed victory by winning the 200 Free Relay. Manuela Mendolicchio and Kimberly Harbert each won two swimming events and Irina Nikolaeva won on both 1-meter and 3-meter diving to lead the Bulldogs in a narrow defeat.
Mendolicchio has earned MW Swimmer of the Week honors in each of the last two weeks in which the Bulldogs competed and leads the conference with three total weekly honors this season. Nikolaeva also earned a MW Diver of the Week award on Jan. 15 and Kelli Funk picked up two Diver of the Week awards earlier this season.
San Jose State visited Fresno earlier this season as the Spartans took part in the season-opening Chick-Fil-A Invitational, placing last in the field of six teams while the 'Dogs were third. The teams faced off in the CSUB Sprint Classic as well, with SJSU finishing in third place and the Bulldogs fourth.
In dual meets against similar opponents this year, the Spartans lost to CSU Bakersfield and UC Davis and defeated San Diego. San Jose State senior Brenna Bushey ranks fourth in the MW in the 100 Fly and also has the team's top time in the 50 Free this year. Megan Au has the top 1-meter diving score on the team this year and Natasha Sondeno has led on 3-meter.
Following the meet the teams will have two and a half weeks to make final preparations for the MW Championship, which will take place Feb. 20-23 in Minneapolis.
