‘Dogs down Dons in final set thriller, 4-3

SAN FRANCISCO – The Fresno State women's tennis team earned a hard-fought win over San Francisco on Sunday at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, clinching the 4-3 victory over the Dons with a third-set win on the final singles court.
"I'm so proud of how the girls handled their first 4-3 match," said coach Ric Mortera. "They showed a lot of poise in pressure situations for such a young team. It was a great experience for us."
DOUBLES
Fresno State was dominant in doubles. The freshman Bulldog duo of Ella Husrefovic and Deniza Marcinkevica set the tone with a 6-1 win over San Francisco's Hanna Borjeson and Rita Colyer on court two. A.C. Hummel and Shir Azran, another freshman duo for Fresno State, then clinched the point with a 6-1 win over Shanna Dos Santos and Margarita Treyes of San Francisco on court one.
With the point decided, the No. 1 Bulldog tandem of Jennifer Timotin and Georgia Lawson claimed a 6-2 victory over San Francisco's Emily Maxfield and Mya Bui on court one.
SINGLES
In singles, the battle between the two squads began. Bui got the Dons on the board first with a 6-2, 6-0, win over Fresno State's Timotin on court one. Maxfield then gave San Francisco the lead by defeating Marcinkevica on court two, 6-1, 6-2.
Azran knotted things back up with a 6-0, 6-1, win on court six over San Francisco's Alexa Meyer. The pendulum continued to swing in the Bulldogs' favor as Lawson then won her match, taking down Colyer of San Francisco on court four, 7-5, 6-3.
Despite Fresno State's 3-2 lead, Borjeson evened the match yet again with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, win over Husrefovic of Fresno State on court three.
With the match on the line and court five down to the final set, Hummel overpowered Treyes, winning her match 6-0, 4-6, 7-5, and clinching the 4-3 victory for the 'Dogs.

After a four-game road stint, Fresno State will be back home Friday to host BYU at 5 p.m. PT at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. Live stats will be available, and admission is free.
