LONG BEACH, Calif. – Fresno State took an early lead and had a four-run fifth inning to pick up a 6-3 road win over Long Beach State after a 5-0 setback against Oregon State on the first day of the Stacy Winsberg Invitational.
Â
Fresno State (4-3) defeated a Long Beach State (3-3) team that began the season ranked No. 25 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll and was still receiving votes this week. Oregon State (7-0), which also defeated Long Beach State later on Friday, is the first team receiving votes just outside the top 25 in both national polls.
Â
How it Happened – vs. Oregon State
Oregon State freshman Frankie Hammoude provided all the offense and sophomore pitcher Mariah Mazon took a no-hitter into the 7th inning in the opener. Danielle East set down the Beavers in order in the first but Hammoude began the 2nd inning with a deep home run to left field.
Â
Mazon retired the first eight batter she faced before Kaitlyn Jennings drew a two-out walk in the third inning. In the top of the fourth the first OSU batter reached on a walk and Hammoude followed with her second home run of the game and fifth already this season to put the Beavers up 3-0. In the fifth inning, Oregon State loaded the bases with two singles and a walk and Hammoude came through again with a 2-run single.
Â
The Beavers stranded the bases loaded in the fifth and left two on in the sixth. In the home half, Miranda Rohleder drew a two out walk but was left aboard. Galvan got the 'Dogs into the hit column leading off the seventh with a double down the right field line. With two out Kelcey Carrasco drew a walk to put runners on the corners but a line drive from Vanessa M. Hernandez was snared by Hammoude at first to end the game.
Â
How it Happened – at Long Beach State
The 'Dogs got their offense going quickly in the second game of the day, scoring a run before an out was recorded. Rohleder tripled to left to begin the game and McKenzie Wilson quickly brought her in with a bunt single. Fresno State would leave the bases loaded in the first but added a second run in the third inning as Hernandez drove in Galvan from third with a two-out single.
Â
Hailey Dolcini allowed just two hits and a walk in three scoreless innings to start the game but ran into some trouble in the fourth as the Beach loaded the bases with one out on three walks. A fielder's choice ground out kept the home team scoreless and got the second out of the inning but Tierra Falo came through with a 2-run single to center to tie the game.
Â
The first two Bulldogs were retired to start the fifth but the next six hitters would reach base with four runs scoring. Rachel Minogue singled, Vanessa Hernandez was hit by a pitch, and Vanessa M. Hernandez drew a walk to load the bases for Haley Fuller, who singled to right to drive in two and the ball got past the LBSU right fielder as all three runners scored and Fuller reached third. Carrasco then lined a single to center to bring in Fuller and put the 'Dogs ahead 6-2.
Â
After a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fifth Danielle Lung entered the game and retired the next six Long Beach State hitters. The leadoff hitter for the Beach reached on an error to start the seventh followed by a flyout and a walk. The senior Hernandez made a sensational diving catch on a line drive into left center for the second out of the inning but another walk loaded the bases to bring the tying run to the plate. Alyssa Gonzalez kept Long Beach alive on an RBI infield single to make it a 6-3 game but Lung then got Breezy Wise on an infield pop up to end the game.
