FULLERTON, Calif. – After a close 4-2 loss to No. 7/7 Tennessee Fresno State got a dominant pitching performance from Hailey Dolcini to earn a 4-1 win over Loyola Marymount on the first day of the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton.
Vanessa Hernandez was the offensive star on Thursday for Fresno State (7-6), belting a two-run home run against the Lady Volunteers and going 2-for-4 with a 2-run double in the win over LMU (7-7). Dolcini allowed just one unearned run and only three hits with a career-high 11 strikeouts against the Lions and freshman Danielle Lung had a fantastic relief appearance against Tennessee (15-2) throwing four shutout innings.
How it Happened – vs. No. 7/7 Tennessee
Fresno State got two aboard in the top of the first as Hayleigh Galvan had a two-out single and Rachel Minogue followed with a walk but the runners would be stranded. Tennessee hit a pair of two-out home runs in the bottom of the first as Haley Bearden hit a 2-run shot and Kaili Philips followed with a solo homer to put the Vols up 3-0.
Tennessee added another two-out run in the second inning on an RBI double by Aubrey Leach. Lung entered in the third and walked the first two batters she faced before retiring the side. In the top of the fourth, Minogue was hit by a pitch with one away and Hernandez followed with a two-run home run to left field, her fourth long ball of the year.
Lung continued to dominate, as she retired six straight hitters after the two walks and ended up allowing just two singles while striking out two over four scoreless innings. Tennessee also got strong pitching in relief, however, as Ashley Rogers allowed just one walk in three scoreless innings out of the bullpen to maintain the Vols' lead and earn the save.
How it Happened – vs. Loyola Marymount
After a scoreless top of the first the Lions got the first two hitters aboard in the home half but Dolcini pitched out of it, striking out two with runners on second and third. The 'Dogs had a two-out rally in the second as Schuylar Broussard with hit by a pitch, Julianna Martinez had a single in her first at-bat as a Bulldog, and Miranda Rohleder followed with an RBI single up the middle.
The 1-0 Fresno State lead held into the fourth inning when Kelcey Carrasco had a leadoff single and Broussard drove in pinch-runner Aaliyah Cuevas with a double into the left-center gap. The Lions got the run back in the bottom of the fourth when LMU got a baserunner on a one-out fielding error and scored on a two-out RBI single.
Minogue and Hernandez had hits in the fifth inning but were left on base. In the sixth, Loyola Marymount had its first two hitters reach but again Dolcini buckled down and got two strikeouts and a fly out to maintain the Bulldog lead.
Hernandez provided some insurance in the seventh as, after McKenzie Wilson had a single and Galvan drew a walk, she brought in both baserunners with a double into left center. The Lions had a two-out single in the bottom of the 7th but nothing more as Dolcini picked up her third complete-game win of the season.
Notable
The Bulldogs play just one game on Friday as they will take on UT San Antonio at 8 p.m. The Roadrunners are 9-8 this season after losses to Tennessee and No. 22/21 Auburn on Thursday.
