FULLERTON, Calif. – Jade Nua, Schuylar Broussard, and Vanessa Hernandez all homered and freshman Danielle Lung allowed just one run and three hits with a career-high nine strikeouts as Fresno State recorded a run-rule win over UT San Antonio, 10-1, in six innings on the second day of the Judi Garman Classic.
Â
Fresno State (8-6) trailed UT San Antonio (9-10) 1-0 into the fourth inning before scoring twice in the fourth, six times in the fifth inning, and ended the game with the Hernandez 2-run home run in the bottom of the sixth. Hernandez, Broussard, Rachel Minogue, Kelcey Carrasco, and Miranda Rohleder all had two hits in the game as the 'Dogs posted season highs in hits (14) and total bases (26).
Â
How it Happened
Lung got the first two outs in the first inning before UTSA's Riley Grunberg and Kindell Brooks both doubled on consecutive pitches to plate a run. Hernandez made a sensational diving catch in center to end the inning, and Lung struck out the side in the second and didn't allow another hit until the sixth inning.
Â
Fresno State got on the board in the fourth inning as Carrasco had a one-out single and Nua hit a pinch-hit 2-run homer, her first as a Bulldog.
Â
The 'Dogs sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth inning, as McKenzie Wilson and Hayleigh Galvan led off with consecutive singles and Minogue drove them both in with a double down the right field line. Hernandez followed with an RBI double and three batters late Broussard hit her first home run of the season to drive in three more runs.
Â
UTSA had a hit and two walks in the top of the sixth to load the bases with two out but Lung got an infield pop out to end the inning. Minogue had another doubles to lead off the bottom of the sixth and Hernandez ended the game with a long ball over the wall in center.
Â
Notable
The Bulldogs are scheduled to play two more games in Fullerton on Saturday against UConn at 12:30 p.m. and No. 5/6 Washington at 3:00 p.m. but rain in the forecast may change the schedule.
