Colorado State rallies for win in game two

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Fresno State hit three home runs and held a 4-1 lead before Colorado State scored 10 times in the bottom of the fifth inning and went on to complete a 12-4 win in six innings in the second game of the weekend series.

Fresno State (14-8, 0-2 MW) got home runs from Jade Nua, Hayleigh Galvan, and Rachel Minogue and led 4-1 going to the bottom of the fifth inning before the Colorado State (19-4, 2-0 MW) rally. The Rams have now won 10 consecutive games and are 10-0 at home this season.

Minogue and Miranda Rohleder had two-hit days as the 'Dogs had nine hits, just one fewer than the Rams, but left eight runners on base. Colorado State had just two hits and one walk through the first four innings of the game before the late rally.

How it Happened
Colorado State manufactured a run in the first inning with a leadoff walk, sacrifice bunt, and RBI single from Haley Donaldson. The 1-0 lead held in to the fourth inning when Minogue had a leadoff double (watch) and, two batters later, Nua homered to right center to give the 'Dogs a 2-1 lead (watch).

The first two Bulldogs were retired in the fifth inning before Galvan homered to center (watch) and Minogue followed with a line shot over the wall in right center (watch). Danielle East retired seven straight batters, setting the Rams down in order in both the third and fourth innings, but Colorado State got its bats going in the bottom of the fifth.

The Rams sent 14 batters to the plate in the fifth with the first five batters recording hits. Ashley Ruiz tied the game at 4-4 with an RBI single and Colorado State took the lead when Tara Shadowen scored on a wild pitch. Back-to-back bases loaded walks put the Rams up 7-4 and Corina Gamboa broke the game open with a grand slam down the left field line.

The 'Dogs loaded the bases with two singles and a CSU fielding error in the top of the sixth but could not cut into the deficit. In the bottom half, the Rams loaded the bases themselves and, with two out, Gamboa singled through the left side to bring in the 12th CSU run and end the game.

Notable
- For the second straight day Fresno State got to CSU ace Jessica Jarecki, scoring four runs against her in 4.2 innings after tallying three runs and knocking her out of the game in the third inning on Friday. Jarecki entered the weekend leading the MW with a 1.17 ERA this season but the 'Dogs have added nearly a run to that average as she now has a 2.14 season ERA.
- The Bulldogs hit three home runs in a game for the third time this season, having also done so vs. UC Riverside and UT San Antonio.
- Saturday's game marked the first time this season that Fresno State lost a game in which it held a lead. The 'Dogs had been 12-0 when leading after four innings.
- The Bulldogs are 13-3 in home and neutral site games this year but 1-5 in true road games.
- Colorado State received votes in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches' poll this week.
