FRESNO, Calif. – For the second consecutive night Fresno State shut down the Toreros offensively and pushed across runs in four different innings to record a 5-0 shutout of San Diego on Friday on the second day of the Fresno State Invitational.
Â
Over two games against the Toreros, Fresno State (18-11) allowed just six singles and outscored San Diego (15-18) 19-0. After Hailey Dolcini and Danielle East combined for a one-hit shutout of USD on Thursday, Danielle Lung threw five scoreless innings on Friday before East pitched the last two innings to finish off another shutout.
Â
Rachel Minogue, Miranda Rohleder, and Hayleigh Galvan all had two hits for the 'Dogs on Friday with Minogue driving in two runs. Jade Nua had a single and a walk to extend her on-base streak to 16 consecutive games as the 'Dogs tallied 10 hits on Friday after a season-high 15 hits vs. San Diego on Thursday.
Â
How it Happened
After the 'Dogs scored six runs in each of the first two innings in Thursday's game, San Diego kept Fresno State off the scoreboard in the first inning on Friday but the Bulldogs took the lead in the second. Fresno State loaded the bases with two out on a single by Galvan and two walks and Vanessa M. Hernandez brought in Nua with the first run of the game on an infield single (watch).
Â
Fresno State added one in the second inning as Minogue and Vanessa Hernandez had one-out singles and Nua delivered a sacrifice fly. Galvan followed with an infield single to bring in Hernandez and put the Bulldogs ahead 3-0 (watch). In the fourth inning, Miranda Rohleder singled and stole second with two away and Minogue delivered an RBI single up the middle (watch).
Â
Meanwhile, San Diego had single runners on base in each of the first four innings but Lung prevented any serious scoring threats as USD had just two runners reach second base. The Toreros got runners on the corners with two out in the fifth but the shortstop Hernandez made a nice grab on a liner up the middle to end the inning (watch).
Â
The Bulldogs added a fifth run in the sixth inning as McKenzie Wilson had a leadoff single, stole second, and moved to third on a USD error and scored on a sacrifice fly from Minogue. East pitched around a pair of singles in the sixth and got a double play ball and another groundout in the seventh to complete the shutout.
Â
