Bulldogs drop MW opener at San Diego State, 4-1

SAN DIEGO – Fresno State dropped its Mountain West opener on Friday afternoon, 4-1, to San Diego State at the Aztec Tennis Center despite a late rally from the Bulldogs that was halted with the clinching point. Fresno State drops to 7-8 on the year while the Aztecs improved to 10-7.

The loss was just the fifth against a MW opponent during the regular season since the 'Dogs moved into the league during the 2012-13 season (27-5).
DOUBLES
San Diego State controlled doubles play from the start to grab the early advantage.

Nnena Nadozie and Alicia Melosch put the Aztecs up with a 6-3 win at No. 1 over Deniza Marcinkevica and Ella Husrefovic. Leading on Court 2 and 3, Mia Smith and Magda Aubets closed out the doubles point at No. 2 for the home side with a 5-2 defeat of Georgia Lawson and A.C. Hummel.
SINGLES
Fresno State quickly leveled the match as Shir Azran dispatched Melosch on Court 3, 6-3, 6-1. It was the freshman's ninth win of the spring, and first in the No. 3 spot.

The lead was short-lived though as SDSU regained the upperhand with a 6-2, 6-1 win from Nadoze on Court 2. The Aztecs added another point at No. 1 as Mia Smith defeated Jennifer Timotin, 6-4, 6-3.

With the final three matches heading into third sets, the Bulldogs needed each of them. Holding 3-1 and 3-0 leads on Court 4 and 5, the dual ended at No. 6. Augustina Rimoldi clinched the 4-1 dual win for the Aztecs with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Lawson.
