Â
Fresno State (30-14, 8-7 MW) has its 38th consecutive 30-win season and has now won three straight MW series and eight of its last 10 MW games. Utah State (13-25, 4-13 MW) played the Bulldogs tough over the last two games of the series, with both games tied going to the seventh inning, but was swept by Fresno State for the second consecutive season.
Â
Broussard homered in each game of the series, hitting four home runs over three games after entering the series with seven career home runs in her three collegiate season. Hayleigh Galvan also homered for the 'Dogs on Saturday leading off the ninth inning for the go-ahead run. Vanessa Hernandez and Jade Nua both had three-hit games on Saturday and McKenzie Wilson had two hits and stole her 30th base of the year.
Â
Danielle Lung started Saturday's game and ended up tossing five scoreless innings as she pitched the first two innings and then tossed the last three after reentering in the seventh, earning her 13th win of the year. She allowed just two hits and tallied three strikeouts while Danielle East and Hailey Dolcini combined to pitch the middle innings.
Â
How it Happened
The Bulldogs loaded the bases with three walks in the top of the first but were unable to push across a run. In the second inning, Utah State was able to load the bases itself on a double and two walks but Lung got a strikeout and foul out to escape the jam (watch).
Â
After the 'Dogs left a runner at third in the top of the third, the Aggies got on the scoreboard as, with two out, Lexi Orozco and Bailee Trapp hit back-to-back solo home runs. Fresno State drew even with a pair of two-out runs of its own in the fourth inning as Hernandez had a leadoff double and scored when Broussard hit her third home run of the series (watch).
Â
Utah State came right back with a double, a walk, and a hit batter to load the bases with nobody out in the home half of the inning but East limited the damage to just one run on a sacrifice fly from Orozco, striking out a pair to get out of the inning (watch).
Â
After a quiet fifth inning, Hernandez led off the sixth inning with a single and, with one out, Nua drove in pinch runner Aaliyah Cuevas with a pinch-hit double to tie the game (watch). Broussard followed with her second two-run homer of the game and fourth long ball of the series to put the Bulldogs ahead 5-3 (watch).
Â
In the bottom of the sixth East got the first two outs but issued a walk to put a runner on for Orozco, who matched Broussard with her second homer of the day to tie the game 5-5. Fresno State had a pair of base runners in the seventh but couldn't score, and in the home half Lung reentered and retired the side in order to send the game to extra innings.
Â
Fresno State got a one-out single and stolen base from Wilson in the eighth and Miranda Rohleder followed with an infield single but Wilson would be stranded at third. In the bottom half Lung got the first two outs before hitting a batter in front of Orozco. The 'Dogs decided to intentionally walk the Aggie slugger to move the potential winning run to second base but Lung struck out Trapp to end the inning (watch).
Â
Galvan hit the first pitch she saw over the wall in left to open the top of the ninth (watch). Hernandez followed with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt before Nua singled up the middle to drive home an insurance run (watch). In the last of the ninth Utah State had a leadoff single but Wilson made a great catch in right (watch) and Broussard made a spectacular play on a diving catch to end the game (watch).
