Fresno State grabs No. 4 seed in Golden Coast Conference Championship

FRESNO, Calif. -- Seedings and the schedule for the 2019 Golden Coast Conference Women's Water Polo Championships, held April 26-28 at the Fresno State Aquatics Center, were announced by the league on Sunday. The Bulldogs will compete as the No. 4 seed and open the tournament against the No. 5 seed, Azusa Pacific, at 5 p.m. PT on Friday.
The GCC Championships start with four quarterfinal games on Friday, with semifinal action on Saturday and the championship held on Sunday. The winner earns an automatic bid to the 2019 National Collegiate Women's Water Polo Championships in May.
Pacific went unbeaten in conference play to claim their second straight regular season title and earn the tournament's top seed. The Tigers, who have not lost to a conference opponent since April of 2017, are 14-8 overall and 7-0 in GCC play. San Diego State and LMU finished tied for second in the GCC standings at 5-2. The Aztecs, 15-14 overall on the season, won the regular season match-up on March 22, 9-7, and earned the number two seed thanks to the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Lions won their last two games of the regular season and are 19-9 overall.
Fresno State and Azusa Pacific finished tied for fourth in the conference standings at 4-3. The Bulldogs earned the tiebreaker thanks to their 11-8 win in Glendale on March 29. Both teams enter the tournament winners of three straight with Fresno State sitting at 12-14 on the year and APU at 17-13.Â
Rounding out the seedings for this year's championships is No. 6 California Baptist (14-16, 2-5), No. 7 Santa Clara (8-16, 1-6) and No. 8 Concordia (9-12, 0-7).
The tournament begins on Friday at 1:30 p.m. when No. 3 LMU takes on No. 6 California Baptist. Game two features No. 2 San Diego State against No. 7 Santa Clara at 3:15 p.m. Game three features No. 4 Fresno State facing No. 5 Azusa Pacific at 5 p.m., followed by top-seed Pacific taking on No. 8 Concordia at 6:45 p.m.
The tournament continues on Saturday with the two consolation games at 11 a.m. and 12:45 p.m., followed by the two semifinals at 2:30 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. Action on Championship Sunday begins at 9:15 am and concludes with the title game at 2:30 pm.
Single day tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children while all-session passes are $30 for adults and $15 for children. Tickets can be purchased one hour prior to the start of the first game each day (there are no advance sales).Â
