SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Freshman McKenzie Wilson tied the Fresno State single-season steals record with her 34th theft (watch) but San Diego State used a four-run fifth inning to pick up a 4-2 win over the Bulldogs in the series finale on Sunday.
Wilson's 34th steal of the year came in the top of the seventh inning. She matched the single season program record held by Brenna Moss, who had 34 steals in both the 2013 and 2014 season. With a single in Sunday's game Wilson has also now reached base in 19 consecutive games and has a team season-long 11 game hitting streak.
Rachel Minogue had two hits for Fresno State (33-18, 11-10 MW), which matched San Diego State (24-24, 11-10 MW) with seven hits in the game. Both team also had two errors and both left six runners on base in another well pitched game by both teams.
How it Happened
Schuylar Broussard and Minogue had consecutive singles with one out in the first inning but could not advance. San Diego State had a double and a single in the bottom of the second to put runners on the corners with two out but Hailey Dolcini got her first strikeout of the game to end the inning (watch).
In the top of the third, Wilson led off with a single and appeared to have stolen second but the first base umpire ruled that she left early. Neither team had a runner advance past first base again until Hayleigh Galvan led off the top of the fifth with a single and a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second. Vanessa M. Hernandez drew a walk before the Aztecs made a pitching change and Marissa Moreno ended the inning with a strikeout and ground out.
The Aztecs got the first two hitters aboard in the bottom of the fifth on a walk and a Bulldog error. Fresno State got the first out at third on a fielder's choice play by Hernandez (watch) before the next hitter singled to load the bases. Shelby Thompson was hit by a pitch to force in a run from third and Kelsey Munoz followed with a double down the left field line that cleared the bases. Danielle Lung entered and allowed a single but got the last two outs to strand two.
Minogue and Vanessa Hernandez had one-out singles in the top of the sixth. Kaitlyn Jennings hit a groundball to the pitcher Moreno who threw wildly to third, allowing pinch runner Dolly Stevens to score. On the same play, SDSU left fielder Kristen Parker had an errant throw back to the infield and Hernandez scored as well to cut the Aztec lead in half to 4-2 (watch).
The freshman Hernandez had a leadoff single in the top of the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate. On a fielder's choice with one out Wilson reached and stole second but Moreno got the final out.
