FRESNO, Calif. – The Red Wave got a first look at the 2019 Fresno State volleyball team in an intrasquad Red-Blue Scrimmage on Friday night in the Save Mart Center.
The Blue topped the Red 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 25-23) as all four sets were very competitive, resulting in a total of 43 ties and 20 lead changes. The majority of the Bulldogs played for both teams as the sides changed from set to set. The 2019 team also had a chance to spend time with many former 'Dogs on Friday both before and after the match.
"I thought they played really hard," Fresno State head coach Jonathan Winder said. "We weren't perfect but they played really hard and had fun getting out there and competing. It was great for us to see some people in a different light and really step up. I thought we passed pretty well and took some really good swings from time to time. We blocked a lot of balls tonight too and that was good to see since we haven't spent a ton of time on blocking in practice."
The Bulldogs combined for 24.0 team blocks in the match, with Minnesota transfer Rebecca Rendahl leading the way with 12.0 blocks and Montana graduate transfer McKenzie Kramer totaling 10.0. A trio of newcomers also led the 'Dogs in kills as junior Amilya Thompson had a match-high 17 kills and juniors Savanah Smith and Desiree Sukhov each had 15. Kramer added 10 kills for a double-double and Sukhov had six blocks.
Senior Madelyn Halteman had a match-high 46 assists along with 13 digs and two service aces and junior Reagan Leonard tallied a team-high 22 digs. Freshman Mikayla Weiss had a double-double with 26 assists and 18 digs while senior Montez Uigaese recorded a team-high four service aces as well as nine kills and seven digs. Nine newcomers saw their first live action as Bulldogs in the Save Mart Center on Friday.
"It's a totally new team this year," Winder added. "We have some continuity with our ball control in passing and setting and the culture continues to move forward and build. I think the players that were here last year and the ones that returned have laid a great foundation for how we play Fresno State Volleyball. We have a lot of new people to get on board with that as fast as possible and we have a lot of talented players and people on this team."
Fresno State opens the regular season next Friday and Saturday at the Green Bay Invite in Green Bay, Wisc. The 'Dogs open the year facing Ohio next Friday at 11 a.m. Pacific Time before facing Indiana State and Green Bay next Saturday. The team will be back in the Save Mart Center to host the Fresno State Invitational Sept. 5-6.
