Arizona transfer Handy joins Bulldogs

FRESNO, Calif. – Former high school All-American and Central Valley native Julia Handy has joined the Bulldogs for the 2019 season after transferring from the University of Arizona.
"Julia is someone I've known for a while through recruiting and she's a really good player," Fresno State head coach Jonathan Winder said. "She was really successful in high school and we feel pretty fortunate to have her here back in the Valley representing this community and university. She plays the game the right way at an extremely high level. I'm thrilled that she's a part of our program and I know she will have a huge impact moving forward."
A setter from Hilmar who redshirted as a freshman at Arizona last season, Handy becomes the 10th Bulldog newcomer in 2019. She is the second former Pac-12 player to join Fresno State this year, along with former Washington State outside hitter Savanah Smith. Handy is now the third Bulldog newcomer that began her career at a Power 5 school along with Smith and Minnesota transfer Rebecca Rendahl.
Handy, whose parents Craig and Fatima are both Fresno State alumni, was a PrepVolleyball.com All-American as a sophomore and junior at Turlock HS. She was selected to the Cal-High Sports All-State team in 2017 and was a two-time Sac Joaquin Section MVP and two-time Sac Metro Player of the Year. A four-year first team all-conference selection, Handy collected over 5,000 assists in her high school career, averaging just under 10 assists per set, and also had over 200 service aces and more than 400 kills.
She helped lead Turlock to a league championship and state semifinal appearance as a senior. She also played for Rage Volleyball Club, winning the 2015 Open National Championship while being named the tournament MVP. One of her Rage teammates was fellow Bulldog newcomer Amilya Thompson.
Handy was part of an Arizona team that went 22-11 and reached the NCAA Tournament last season. She will be a redshirt freshman with still four years of athletic eligibility as a Bulldog.
