FUNCHAL, Portugal – Fresno State water polo sophomore Daphne Guevremont traveled to Portugal to compete in the 2019 World Women's Junior Championship as the team captain of Team Canada. The tournament began on Sept. 9 and will run through Sept. 15.
"Representing Canada is the best opportunity I could imagine having," Guevremont said. "While growing up playing water polo in Canada, my dream is to represent my country in the Olympics and that is still my dream. I'm really proud to be Canadian and I'm really happy I have this opportunity to represent Canada."
16 national teams have traveled to compete for gold on the international stage. The teams have been divided into four groups. Group A consists of Hungary, United States, Australia and Japan. Brazil, Netherlands, Kazakhstan and Spain make up Group B. Group C features Russia, Portugal, Italy and Russia. Group D touts Greece, Canada, New Zealand and China.
Guevremont and her squad look to improve upon an eighth-place finish at the 2017 World Women's Junior Championship in Volos, Greece.
Canada opened the tournament against China on Monday, falling to the Chinese 12-9. Guevremont and teammate Valeria Rojas lead the team with two goals apiece in the game.
"The coaches gave us all the tools we needed to be ready in preparation for this game. We knew that their center was their biggest asset and that they would use her as much as possible, but we had difficulty staying out of the box. In attack, many of our shots were not even on target, which hurt us a lot. However, we created several great opportunities on our drives, and we just need to improve on our execution. Against Greece, it will be another tough match in the center, but this is our chance to implement what we have learned from our game against China." said Guèvremont.
Canada will face Greece in the next round, before finishing group play against New Zealand. The top two teams from each group will advance to the crossover round on Sept. 12. The quarterfinals will be played on Sept. 13, the semifinals on Sept. 14 and the championship on Sept. 15.
Guevremont will see another familiar face in Portugal, Fresno State head coach Natalie Benson is the head coach of the USA Junior National Team also competing in the tournament this week. Team USA opened with an 11-11 draw against Japan. The Americans will take on Hungary in the next round.
