Red Wave,
From the moment I stepped on Fresno State's campus over two years ago, I have gained an appreciation for the values, principles, and work ethic that permeates from the people of the Central Valley. I believe the same grit and resolve that makes up the DNA of the Valley, is reflected in the fabric that makes up our Bulldog student-athletes.
Our mission is, and will always be, to holistically serve all of our student-athletes and prepare them for transformative success in competition and, more importantly, in the classroom and in life. So it is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the difficult decision to discontinue three of our varsity sport programs, and subsequently reduce the number of opportunities for our young men and women, was made.
This is an incredibly difficult day for our entire Bulldog Family and one of the most challenging days of my career. I am incredibly saddened that we had to make these decisions and am hurting for our student-athletes who have had their sport eliminated. I appreciate the commitment they made to excel as a student-athlete. The contributions made by our lacrosse, men's tennis, and wrestling programs over the years will never be forgotten or minimized. To the former and current student-athletes, coaches, supporters, families, and fans of these three programs, I express my gratitude for all that you have done for Fresno State.
With these reductions, the future of our overall athletics endeavor becomes more fiscally solvent and in better alignment with our conference and competitive peers. In order for us to fulfill our mission of preparing the future leaders of our Valley community, responsible action had to be taken at this time despite how emotionally difficult it is for our students. Fresno State Athletics has always been known for our determination, resilience and character, and in this pivotal moment in our athletics history, we must come together now more than ever.
Without a doubt, a lot of Bulldogs throughout our communities are hurting right now, but I am confident that together we will persevere and we will conquer this challenge just as we always have, with the strength and determination of a Bulldog. We appreciate and thank all those involved in the lacrosse, men's tennis and wrestling programs for all their contributions to Fresno State and our community.
