FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State men's basketball team rallied for a hard-fought 82-77 victory over the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday afternoon at the Save Mart Center.
Fresno State (8-14, 4-7 Mountain West), who overcame a 17-point deficit late in the first half, has now won three of its last five games, which includes wins in each of its last two contests.
Meanwhile, New Mexico (16-8, 5-6 MW) started the season with a 15-3 record, but have since lost five of its last six games.
Fresno State freshman forward Orlando Robinson recorded a game-best 20 points with 15 rebounds, three assists and two steals for his fifth career double-double.
Nate Grimes also had a double-double – the 21st of his career (seventh this season) – with 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Bulldogs. Grimes made all five of his field goal attempts, including a pair of 3-pointers.
How it happened: After Fresno State struggled to match New Mexico's energy and execution for much of the first half, the Bulldogs settled in and trimmed the 17-point deficit down to 11 at halftime.
The Bulldogs then proceeded to outscore the Lobos 48-32 in the second half, en route to the 82-77 victory over UNM.
Robinson scored 12 of his 20 points – and grabbed 10 of his 15 rebounds – in the second half.
As a team, Fresno State shot a season-best 56.5 percent from the field (26-for-46), including a scorching 63.6 percent from the field and beyond the 3-point line after halftime.
The Bulldogs also dominated the glass, outrebounding the Lobos 37-22 for the game.
Quotes:
Justin Hutson, Fresno State head coach
On the team's performance…
"I was very disappointed in our defensive effort early. I'm going to go back and look at that and see why that was. But I was very proud of how we came back and fought and got stops when we needed to."
On the Bulldogs' freshmen stepping up…
"They're out there learning on the fly and they're doing the best they can and they're sticking with it, and they're together. They're saying, "Come on let's get a stop." I couldn't be more proud of them. Guys came in and gave us great minutes. And Orlando and Jarred gave us some leadership. When the ship wasn't righted, they were off saying the right things."
Jarred Hyder, Fresno State freshman guard
On the team's mentality…
"At the beginning, we weren't really playing our type of basketball. So my mentality coming out of that was to get us going in that way of just attacking and finding my teammates or getting to the rim. So I just made sure to make that an emphasis when I came back."
Orlando Robinson, Fresno State freshman forward
"I told my team that we needed to stay together. In the first half, the constant threes really damaged our morale, so if we stay together, we win the game, that's what I was telling them. If we played hard on defense, got stops, then we'll win."
