FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State interim head lacrosse coach Kara Concheck announced the additions of Abigail Bergevin and Princess Zabel to her staff as assistant coaches on Monday.
Â
"Princess and Abby have both made an immediate impact on our program in a short amount of time," said Concheck on her hires. "Abby's passion for the game of lacrosse, and for building relationships, has made her a huge asset as the proud Bulldog alumni she is. Her energy is contagious. Princess is a confident and established defensive specialist. Her game knowledge as well as her work ethic will leave our group well prepared for every match up this season."
Â
Bergevin returns to the Fresno State lacrosse program after a four-year career as a defender for the Bulldogs. The Lake Oswego, Ore. native graduated in 2018 with a business degree from Fresno State. Bergevin inked her name in the Bulldogs' record book as one of the best defenders that the program has produced. She is second in program history with 55 career caused turnovers, just one shy of the program record.
Â
Zabel makes the move to the Valley after most recently spending time at Bucknell University as an assistant coach for the Bison where she began in 2018. Over the course of the 2019 season, the Bison held an advantage over their opponents in caused turnovers and clears behind Zabel's assistance with the midfielders and defenders.
Â
In the two seasons before her time at Bucknell, she served as the head coach at Central Connecticut State, where she mentored three all-conference selections in 2017. Before her stint with the Blue Devils, she was an assistant coach at her alma mater, Villanova, for two campaigns.
Â
While at previous stops, Zabel has worked with midfielders and defenders, and has had a strong impact in the recruiting aspect of her programs.
Â
As a player at Villanova from 2009-12, Zabel began her career as a midfielder, but made the transition to a defender as a senior.Â
Â
The Bulldogs are fresh off of a pair of spring season scrimmages, and are set to head east for their season opener at Furman on Saturday. Fresno State will have a pair of games on President's Day weekend, playing at Winthrop on Feb. 17, before returning to the Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium to host Stetson on Feb. 22.
