USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Fresno State saw its 14-game unbeaten streak, and unblemished record in conference, snapped on Wednesday night at Clune Arena, 88-65, to Air Force.
The Falcons shot 51.6 percent from the field, the second-highest for a Bulldog opponent this season. The 'Dogs also allowed a season-high 61.5 percent from 3. The Bulldogs on the other hand shot 43.1 percent from the floor, 19.0 percent from 3. Air Force controlled the glass, holding a 40-25 advantage. The 'Dogs also registered a season-low six assists on the night.
Haley Cavinder and Hanna Cavinder led the team with 19 and 15 points. Air Force got 22 from both Kaelin Immel and Riley Snyder.
How It Happened
The Bulldogs got going early inside, picking up five points from Wytalla Motta in the first 90 seconds but on an and-1 the junior needed to be subbed out after landing awkwardly. She would return to the game later though. Air Force scored the next nine points to take their first lead of the game at 10-7 with 3:31 on the clock. Fresno State crept back within one twice in the next minute-plus but the Falcons closed the quarter with an and-1 and 3-pointer to go up 18-11 after 10 minutes.
Unable to find her rhythm in the first quarter, Maddi Utti wouldn't get a chance in the second as she was tagged with her second foul in the opening possession of the second period. Hanna though scored back-to-back buckets to bring the 'Dogs back within three but AFA answered with seven straight, five at the line from Immel. Five more came for the Falcons after a jumper from Kendyll Kinzer as the home team's lead moved up to 13 with less than five minutes to play in the half. A 3-pointer to close the period gave Air Force their largest lead of the half at 14, 41-27.
The Bulldogs pulled to close as 10 within 3:49 in the third following a 5-0 spurt but the Falcons answered with nine of the next 11 points to push their lead up 60-43 and force a timeout from Fresno State. The 'Dogs could only get one back in the final two minutes as they trailed 66-50 heading into the fourth. Hanna started the period by getting into the paint for a layup but 14 was as close as Fresno State got the remainder of the game as the Bulldogs were outscored 22-15 in the final frame.
