Both teams smacked 10 hits apiece in the hitters duel. Four Bulldogs tallied multi-hit games with McKenzie Wilson leading the charge for Fresno State with three hits. Kaitlyn Jennings, Miranda Rohleder and Kelcey Carrasco each posted two. Rohleder led the team with three RBIs.
Danielle East (1-1) earned her first win in the circle this season, entering in relief for the starter Danielle Lung.
How it happened
Fresno State got on the board early, scoring one run in the first. Wilson opened the bottom of the first inning with a triple, and scored on a wild pitch during the next at bat.
In the third inning, UCSB exploded for seven runs. UCSB had three consecutive hits to start the third that led to the game evening, 1-1. East stepped into the circle in relief for the Bulldogs with two runners on and no outs. The Gauchos drew a walk from East to load the bases. The go-ahead run would come home on a hit by pitch next, and an error by Schuylar Broussard at short stop led another run crossing the plate. Back-to-back singles from the Gauchos and a fielding error in right field would allow for four more runs, and a 7-1 UCSB lead at the end of the top half of the inning.
The Bulldogs, down by six runs, went on the attack. Kelsey Hall drew a leadoff walk, and Jennings and Wilson followed with back-to-back singles to score Hall for the first run of nine consecutive runs by the Bulldogs over the next two innings. Vanessa Hernandez hit a 2 RBI single to bring the 'Dogs deficit to 7-4. With Fresno State chipping away at the lead and only one out, UCSB made a pitching change, but it didn't stop Carrasco from batting one more run in as Fresno State closed the scoring gap with four runs on four hits.
In the top of the fourth, East sent the Gauchos down in order to give the bats another whack. Fresno State loaded the bases with its first three sent to the batters box, the first run of the fourth came in thanks to a fielding error. Down by one run, Rohleder hit a clutch two-out double to bring home three runs to put Fresno State in the lead. Carrasco followed with an RBI single to make it nine unanswered runs for the Bulldogs for a 10-7 advantage.
Fresno State's defense would make three clutch plays in the top of the fifth to send the Gauchos down in order. Hall grabbed the first out in center field. Broussard laid out, making the catch on her way down at short stop for the second out. Carrasco kept the same energy diving for a foul ball off the bat for the final out of the inning.
East and the defense held the Gauchos scoreless for three straight innings, but a home run in the top of the seventh would threaten the Bulldogs lead making it a one-run game. Fresno State brought Dariana Orme in for the save. Orme and the defense would get the 'Dogs out of the inning unscathed, securing a 10-9 win over UCSB.
What's next – Fresno State will play UIC Friday at 5 p.m. PT and Ohio State at 7 p.m. PT at Margie Wright Diamond.
