TAMPA, Fla. – The Fresno State softball team started the 2020 season with two wins on the first day of the South Florida Tournament, posting a 5-0 shutout over Georgia State and a close 3-2 win over USF on Friday in the USF Softball Stadium.
Fresno State (2-0) was led by strong pitching that only allowed three runs, and big bats that had two clutch home runs when it mattered most. In the season opener, Danielle Lung threw five scoreless innings only allowing two hits in her first win of the season and in the second game Hailey Dolcini posted the first complete game of the season with nine strikeouts and just five hits against USF.
Schuylar Broussard had a big game against Georgia State going 2-for-3 with a 3-run home run. McKenzie Wilson battled at the plate against the Bulls going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, while Kelcey Carrasco hit a solo home run to seal in the victory.
"We had two great wins today," head coach Linda Garza. "We came out prepared and ready. Lung set the tone for our pitching staff, and we got Dariana Orme an early look. Dolcini had a fantastic game against USF. McKenzie Wilson continues to set the table and gave us opportunities to score. Carrasco and Broussard stepped up for us today as seniors and got big hits. We are looking forward to getting better tomorrow."
How it Happened – vs. Georgia State
Lung had a strong start in the circle for the Bulldogs not allowing a hit until the third inning when Georgia State managed to hit a single to get a runner on base, but it was short lived as Carrasco and Broussard combined to deny the runner's attempt to steal ending the inning.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard after a two-out rally at the bottom of the third inning. Miranda Rohleder started things off with a two-out single for the Bulldogs' first hit of the game. Wilson followed with another single, and freshman Kelsey Hall drove in the first run of the season with a double. The two-out rally continued as Broussard smashed a 3-run home run over the center field wall, to put the 'Dogs up 4-0.
Fresno State maintained dominance on the defensive end retiring six straight Panthers.
The Bulldogs would tack on one more run as Carrasco hit a sacrifice fly with bases loaded to drive in the fifth run.
Lung ended her day with six strikeouts, and Orme would make her Bulldog debut to close the game. Orme finished the last two innings with three strikeouts and only allowed one hit.
How it happened – vs. USF
Wilson made a statement with a leadoff single to get the Bulldogs' offense going. Broussard followed with her fourth hit of the day to bring Wilson home, giving Fresno State a 1-0 lead. USF matched Fresno State's run with one of its own off a sacrifice fly.
Dolcini held the Bulls scoreless through the next four innings while dishing six strikeouts, giving the Bulldogs the opportunity to get their offense going. Carrasco capitalized on the opportunity with Fresno State's second home run of the day, smashing the ball over the fence for two runs to take a 3-1 lead.
The Bulldogs had two runners on base at the top of the sixth inning, looking to extend their lead, but a new pitcher and two strong defensive plays from the Bulls didn't allow a run to cross the plate.
USF rallied with a single shot over the center field fence to make it a one run game 3-2, but Dolcini logged her eighth strikeout to end the inning and stop the comeback.
Fresno State stepped back up to the plate, the 'Dogs were sent down in order, leaving it to the defense to finish the game.
Freshman Alesia Denby made the catch at first base to log the first out of the final inning. Dolcini dished her ninth strikeout of the game for the second out, and Kaitlin Jennings would finish the inning making the catch in left field for the final out.
What's next – Fresno State will play two games tomorrow, facing Illinois State tomorrow at 6:15 a.m. PT and No. 7 Florida at 11:30 a.m. PT.
