Hayes earns two MOP's as Bulldogs defeat Aggies, 14-5

FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 6 Fresno State equestrian team completed the weekend tri-meet with a 14-5 win over UC Davis on Saturday afternoon at the Student Horse Center. The Bulldogs used a 5-0 sweep in the Horsemanship to lift them to the win.

Fresno State swept the Most Outstanding Performer honors versus the Aggies on Saturday as sophomore Cecily Hayes earned the MOP in both the Fences and Flat events. Sophomores Lexee Padrick (Reining) and Hannah Buijs (Horsemanship) each earned their second MOP of the weekend in their respective events.

"I was really proud of the team's energy all weekend," said Hayes. "The success I had this weekend stemmed from all of the support that they have given me. I truly am grateful to be a part of such a ground-breaking team, and I am excited to see what we accomplish the rest of the season."

How it happened
The Bulldogs continued with their winning ways in the Fences with a 3-2 win in the event on Saturday. Fresno State earned points from sophomores Hayes and Alivia Hart, and freshman Ana Bertozzi. Hayes earned the first point of the event with a season-high 86 to UC Davis' 83. Hart stayed undefeated on the weekend with an 82 to her opponent's 75. Bertozzi earned the third Bulldog point in the Fences with an 80-77 win over Sierra Gunderson.

Fresno State swept in the Horsemanship for the first time this season with points from Moch, Hannah Buijs, Hannah Way, Kameron Thorn and Nicole Campbell. A pair of UC Davis riders earned zeroes in the event, and the Bulldogs countered with high-scoring rides to take a 5-0 win in the Horsemanship. Moch had the highest scoring ride versus the Aggies, outscoring Kayla Hickey 73.5-67.5. Campbell and Buijs were near, scoring 73 in their rides.

At the break, Fresno State had an 8-2 lead.

Things were close in the Flat as the event ultimately ended in a 2-2 tie. The Bulldog points were earned by Hayes who scored a season-high 84 to her opponent's 65, and Bertozzi who rode for a personal-best 84 to UC Davis' 70. Senior Erica Rosinski tied in her ride with a 74.

On the Western side, the Bulldog reiners continued what the Horsemanship squad began as the Reining 'Dogs came away with a 4-1 win in the event behind points from Padrick, Bailey Alexander, Paige Barton and Julianne Kelley. Padrick earned her second win and MOP of the weekend with a 72-71.5 edging over Charlize Zuraek.

Up Next
The Bulldogs make a trip to Texas to face TCU and Baylor at their home arenas on Feb. 21 and 22, respectively. These will be the Bulldogs' first Big 12 meets since hosting Baylor on Nov. 8.

Fresno State returns home on Mar. 6 to host the University of Lynchburg in a Jumping Seat only competition, and SMU for Senior Day at the Student Horse Center.
