The Bulldogs battled back to lock down a 4-3 victory over the BYU Cougars.
FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's tennis team secured a 4-3 road victory over the BYU Cougars with a huge comeback in singles play.
Although BYU took control early in doubles play, the 'Dogs didn't give up hope and battled back to gain four wins in singles play to bring home the victory.
"Great fight by our team today," Fresno State head coach Mariana Cobra said. "We knew it would be tough coming to play BYU in a very different environment than what we are used to."
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Bulldogs fell short in doubles play as the Cougars took the first point of the day. BYU's No. 2 and 3 position closed out their matches (6-1, 6-2) to gain the advantage going into singles play.
"We were too timid and defensive in doubles and BYU took advantage of that," Cobra said.
SINGLESÂ
Fresno State answered back in singles play after giving up three straight points in doubles and singles.
Deniza Marcinkevica gave the 'Dogs their first point of the day with a 6-4, 6-2 win over her opponent.
The Bulldogs' No. 1, 6 and 5 slots followed, all with two-set wins to lock down the 4-3 victory, with freshman Carlotta Nonnis Marzano winning the clinching point at No. 5 singles.
Â
"I thought most of our team did a good job resetting in singles and playing point by point especially in pressure situations," Cobra said. "We talk a lot about embracing challenges and being the one creating opportunities and we were able to do that today. I'm proud of the growth that these young women are showing."
