FULLERTON, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team powered itself past Cal State Fullerton behind three home runs to finish the 2020 Judi Garman Classic with a 10-2 victory on Sunday night at Titan Stadium.
Senior Schuylar Broussard led the attack for Fresno State (16-4) at the plate going 3-of-4 with two home runs and four RBIs. Senior Miranda Rohleder had one hit, but it was a big one - a grand slam that gave her four RBIs alike Broussard. Sophomore McKenzie Wilson also went 3-of-4 and logged three stolen bases. Hailey Dolcini pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts to record her second win of the weekend and seventh of the season.
"Our offense was explosive today," said head coach Linda Garza. "We had a game plan and executed it well. Coach Matt Lisle and coach [Jodie] Cox did a good job with our approach with our hitters and pitchers. It's been an emotional week and I'm proud of how our team played."
How it happened
Wilson opened the game with a single and stole second. After moving to third on a ground out, she capitalized on a wild pitch to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead. The Titans responded with a leadoff single of their own in the home half, but catcher Alexandra Preston gunned out the runner at second base on an attempt to steal and Fresno State retired the next two batters to end the inning.
CSF threatened the Bulldogs' one-run lead in the bottom of the second. Dolcini dealt two strikeouts to start the inning, but three consecutive walks would load the bases. Dolcini recovered with an inning-ending strikeout, chalking her fourth of the game.
The Bulldogs had a two-run inning in the third, aided by Wilson hitting her second leadoff single of the game. Broussard brought her home by smashing a two-out home run over the right field wall to push the Bulldogs' lead to 3-0.
Two walks and a wild pitch put two Titans in scoring position with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning. Dolcini dished a strikeout and Haley Fuller caught a laser to third base to end the threat and retain the 3-0 lead.
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 4-0 in the sixth. Broussard smacked her second homer of the game and team-leading fourth of the season over the center field wall to lead off the inning. CSF retired the next three batters to end the frame.
Fresno State scored six runs in the top of the seventh to put the game away. Preston drew a leadoff walk and Kelsey Hall sent a double to center field to bring in the first run. Wilson recorded her third base hit of the game and stole her third base of the game, putting two runners in scoring position. Designated player Vanessa Hernandez drew a walk and Broussard continued to have a hot bat with a base hit, loading the bases. Rohleder sent the first pitch over the center field wall for a grand slam to give the Bulldogs a decisive 10-0 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
CSF managed to bring in two runs before the final out, but Fresno State would take the win and finish the tournament 3-1.Â
The Bulldogs fifth and final game on the schedule for the weekend versus LMU was canceled.
