'Dogs dispatch Spartans 3-1

FRESNO, Calif. – On the final match day of the regular season, the Fresno State women's soccer team not only secured a bye in next week's Mountain West Championship, but also defeated intrastate rival San Jose State 3-1 in dominant fashion on Senior Night. The Bulldogs head to the conference tournament with a 9-6-3 overall record, 7-3-1 in MW play.
Sophomore Kassandra Ceja and freshman Kaelyn Miller scored their eighth and seventh goals of the season, respectively. Sophomore Brooklin Woolf tallied her first career goal.
How It Happened
The Bulldogs came out on the front foot, aggressive in the attack and maintaining long spells of possession. Following a trio of early looks, Kassandra Ceja got the 'Dogs on the board in the 14th minute. Chais Wright whipped in a cross from the left side to Kaelyn Miller who knocked the ball down to an open Ceja. The sophomore stuck a shot across the face of goal into the right netting.
In the 52nd minute, Miller doubled the Bulldogs' lead. With the Spartans unable to clear a dangerous thrown-in from Robyn McCarthy, the ball dropped to the freshman striker who hit a half-volley from the edge of the 18. The attempt ricocheted off a defender and found its way inside the left post past a diving Autum Monty.
Nearly a half hour later, Brooklin Woolf made it 3-0. Pulling Spartan goalkeeper Shayla Sugai out to the right side her six-yard box, Jaylyn Wright spun around slotted a ball to the center of the six to Woolf who chipped in the first goal of her career.
Jaiden McClellan scored for the Spartans in the dying seconds of the match off a corner from Tiana Cello to make the score 3-1.
