'Dogs drop five-set heartbreaker

The Breakdown
SAN JOSE, Calif. -Â The Fresno State volleyball team fell in a five-set battle at San Jose State on Saturday evening at the Spartan Gym.
Fresno State (10-10, 6-6 MW) dropped sets, 25-21, 27-25, 25-20, 26-28, 4-15 to San Jose State (15-7, 9-3 MW).
How It Happened
The opening set saw the 'Dogs get off to a fast start taking a 15-9 lead at the media timeout after a Spartan attack error. A 10-4 run by the Spartans cut the 'Dogs lead to 20-19. The Bulldogs closed out the set with five of the final seven points getting blocks from Rud and Grace Doyle for a 25-21 win.
The second set saw the 'Dogs fall behind 15-11 at the media timeout with a kill by Sukhov cutting the Spartans' lead to 17-14. A 6-3 run for the Spartans pushed SJSU's lead to 23-17, but the Bulldogs stormed back with a 7-1 run of their own to tie the set at 24. After a service error by the Spartans tied the set at 25, SJSU finished out the set with the final two points to even the match at one set apiece.
Set three was tight throughout with ties at 12, 13, 14, 15 & 16 before a 5-1 run surged the 'Dogs ahead 21-17. Back-to-back kills by Sukhov and Amaria Kelley increased the Bulldogs lead to five at 23-18 and a Spartan service error and a kill from Savanah Smith gave the 'Dogs a five-point set win.
The Spartans evened the match at two sets apiece in the fourth despite the 'Dogs jumping out to as large as six at 19-13 after a kill from Doyle. A 10-4 run for SJSU tied the match at 23 and after the 'Dogs had three potential match points, SJSUÂ got a pair of blocks for a 28-26 win.
The fifth and final set saw the Spartans jump out to a 6-1 lead and after a kill by Mikayla Weiss made it 9-4, SJSU finished out the set with six straight points to seal the win.
Notables
The 'Dogs return home next week to host UNLV (16-7, 7-5 MW) on Thursday and San Diego State (6-18, 3-9 MW) on Saturday.

Notables
- Rud recorded her team-leading fourth double-double finishing with a season-best 16 kills and added 13 digs.
- Sukhov posted her third double-double recording 16 kills and a career-best 17 digs.
- The Bulldogs remain tied for sixth in the MW with Boise State.
- Purry matched her season best with nine blocks as she also hit that mark at San Diego State on Oct. 7.
- Freshman Maja Malczewska saw her first action as a Bulldog playing in a pair of sets finishing with two digs.
