The Breakdown
FRESNO, Calif. -Â The Fresno State volleyball team fell in four sets on Thursday evening to UNLV at the Save Mart Center.
Fresno State (10-11, 6-7 MW) dropped sets, 17-25, 25-20, 14-25, 22-25 to UNLV (17-8, 8-6 MW).
How It Happened
The opening set saw the 'Dogs stay within arm's reach of the Rebels trailing only by a pair after a kill by Ella Rud made it 17-15 in favor of the Rebels. A 4-0 run for UNLV pushed the visitors lead to six and the 'Dogs were unable to get closer than five for the remainder of the set.
The second set saw the Rebels jump out to a 12-9 lead before a 10-2 run by the 'Dogs gave them a lead they would relinquish. A kill by Sukhov made it 19-14 for the 'Dogs and forced a UNLV timeout. Back-to-back kills from Savanah Smith and Sukhov kept the 'Dogs ahead by five leading 23-18 and kills from Grace Doyle and Rud evened the match at one set apiece.
The third set saw the 'Dogs hang tough trailing only 12-10 after a kill by Doyle, but a 13-4 run by the Rebels that included nine straight points ended the set and gave them a one set lead.
Looking to even the match in the fourth set and force a deciding fifth, the 'Dogs and Rebels held ties at 15, 16, 18, 19 & 20 before a 3-0 run by the Rebels gave them some breathing room. A kill by Maja Malczewska kept the set alive for the 'Dogs, but a service error ended the set as they Bulldogs fell in four.
