The Breakdown
FRESNO, Calif. -Â The Fresno State volleyball team won a five-set thriller at home over San Diego State on Saturday afternoon at the Save Mart Center.
Fresno State (11-11, 7-7 MW) won sets, 25-16, 17-25, 26-24, 22-25, 15-8Â over San Diego State (7-19, 4-10Â MW).
How It Happened
The 'Dogs got off to a strong start in the opening set jumping out to a 15-9 lead after Savanah Smith and Kasey Purry teamed up for a block. After a kill by the Aztecs brought the visitors back within three at 17-14, the 'Dogs rattled off three straight points to go up six and finished the set with five straight kills, including three by Doyle.
Set two went the way of the Aztecs as the 'Dogs took an early 7-6 lead, but it was all SDSU from there as five straight points put the Aztecs up four and they extended their lead to as many as eight winning the set by that margin.
The Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead in the third set getting out to a commanding 17-4 lead, but SDSU answered back with a 21-6 run to knot the set at 23. After the teams traded kills, a kill by Smith and an ace from Ella Rud gave the 'Dogs a hard-fought 26-24 win.
With the 'Dogs taking a 21-18 lead in the fourth set after a 3-0 run, the Aztecs stood up tough closing out the set on a 7-1 run to force a fifth and deciding set.
A kill by freshman Preslee Lillard helped the Bulldogs get out to a 6-2 lead in the fifth set, an ace by Brooke Cowie extended it the 'Dogs lead to six at 10-4 and three straight points for the 'Dogs sealed the win.
