Bulldogs drop series finale at SDSU

Fresno State returns home to host San Jose State in its home opener on Thursday at 1 p.m. on the Mountain West Network.
SAN DIEGO -Â After winning the season opener a day ago, the Fresno State volleyball team fell short on Saturday in the series finale against San Diego State at the Peterson Gym.
Fresno State (1-1, 1-1 MW) dropped sets to San Diego State (1-3, 1-3 MW), 19-25, 24-26, 20-25.
The Bulldogs were held to 29 kills as a team while hitting .060 as sophomore outside hitter Amaria Kelley had a team-high 10 kills and added three blocks.
Desiree Sukhov chipped in eight kills and six digs while Grace Doyle finished with seven kills and two block assists.
Senior libero Jocelyn Rodriguez came within two digs of matching her career high totaling 16 digs on the afternoon.
How It Happened
After falling behind 16-10 in the opening set, the 'Dogs cut the Aztecs' lead to 21-19 on a SDSU service error, but the Aztecs reeled off the final four points of the set to take a quick 1-0 set lead.
The Bulldogs battled back with a strong second set as the teams had nine lead changes and 12 ties in the set. Facing a 21-19 deficit, the 'Dogs scored five straight points, including three kills by Kelley, to come within set point at 24-21, but SDSU responded with five straight points of their own to win a thrilling set.
A service ace by Doyle put Fresno State ahead 7-4 in the third set and a kill by Kelley tied the set at 12 apiece. The final kill of the match by Kelley brought the 'Dogs back within two at 22-20, but SDSU scored the final three points of the set to complete the sweep.
