FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team saw its three-match winning streak snapped on Saturday evening falling in four sets to Utah State at the Save Mart Center.
The 'Dogs won the opening set 28-26 before falling 23-25, 18-25, 25-27.
Sophomore Amaria Kelley led the way offensively with 13 kills for Fresno State (4-2, 4-2 MW) who hit .104 as a team compared to .182 for Utah State (1-5, 1-5 MW).
The Bulldogs, who stayed in third place in the Mountain West despite the loss, also picked up a third straight double-double by Desiree Sukhov who finished with 12 kills and 13 digs.
Senior Amilya Thompson chipped in 31 assists and 11 digs while Jocelyn Rodriguez had 18 digs. Sophomore Molly Eppright added a career-high 16 digs.
How It Happened
A tight contest throughout the evening, the 'Dogs only set win came in the opening frame taking a 14-11 lead after a kill by Sukhov forced a Aggie timeout. Utah State rallied back to tie the set at 19, but the Bulldogs responded with two points getting a service error and blocks from Grace Doyle and Rebecca Rendahl (watch) to take a 21-19 lead. Ties at 23, 24, 25 and 26 saw each side have the momentum before the final two points of the set went the Bulldogs way with an attack error and a kill by Sukhov.
The second set saw the 'Dogs take a 21-16 lead on a kill by Doyle, but a 9-2 run by the Aggies stymied Fresno State's momentum as Utah State won a close set, 25-23.
After dropping the third set, 25-18, the Bulldogs responded in the fourth set taking a 13-11 lead on a kill by Thompson. Utah State took a small lead at 16-15, but the 'Dogs responded with four straight points getting blocks by Doyle and Kelley (watch) for a 19-16 lead forcing a USU timeout. With ties at 23, 24 & 25, the final two points of the match went the way of the Aggies who secured their first win of the season.
